Nduduzo Makhathini The Myth We Choose

Nduduzo Makhathini has shared “Unembeza,” the fourth and final single from his forthcoming Blue Note album The Myth We Choose. The album is set for release June 26 and follows the South African pianist, composer, and bandleader as he works with a wider group of collaborators while continuing to center song, memory, and history in his music.

The video for “Unembeza” captures Makhathini recording the piece live in the studio with bassist Dalisu Ndlazi and drummer Lukmil Perez. The song is presented as a piano trio performance, and the clip offers a direct look at the players in the room rather than a narrative treatment. The new track follows earlier previews of The Myth We Choose, which Makhathini has framed around the role songs play in shaping how culture remembers itself.

The Myth We Choose was co-produced by Makhathini and his 18-year-old son, Thingo Makhathini. The album also includes guest appearances from Shabaka Hutchings, Black Coffee, Robin Fassie, Keenan Ahrends, Thando Zide, Muneyi, and Omagugu, Makhathini’s spouse and longtime collaborator. In a statement about Thingo’s role in the project, Makhathini said, “Every time you hear a connection to electronics, or different kinds of grooves that people don’t as often associate with me, those are his ideas.”

The release comes as Makhathini prepares for an extensive 2026 tour that begins June 27 at Wigmore Hall in London and continues June 28 at Jazz Baltica in Timmendorfer Strand, Germany. July dates include Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Sunset-Sunside in Paris, and Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. Later 2026 stops include Newport Jazz Festival on Aug. 2, Detroit Jazz Festival on Sept. 6 and 7, SFJAZZ in San Francisco on Sept. 12 and 13, Blue Note Tokyo on Oct. 7 and 8, and Concertzaal De Singer in Antwerp on Oct. 30.

No skips. No filler tracks. Every song belongs.

What's one rock, punk, metal, or alternative album you can listen to straight through without touching the skip button?

like my cat will nap all day and then decide 3 am is the perfect time to zoom around the house yelling at nothing... meanwhile my dog somehow knows exactly when i’m about to wake up and stares at me until i open my eyes lowkey its so weird how they just know things!! also does anyone else notice how their pets sleeping positions are so dramatic??? my cat will sprawl out like she owns the place and the dog curls into a tiny ball like hes trying to disappear... why do they do that?? ok tangent but have yall heard about how some animals sleep with half their brain awake?? like dolphins do this so they can still swim and breathe while resting... imagine if humans could do that... like, id probably still forget to set my alarm tho lol

I can say that most people now are making use of one streaming service or another to watch their favorite movies and TV shows including music too. Netflix and Spotify are my favourite which I've been using for years.

What's your favorite streaming service?

ok so i know there are a TON of songs about the ocean and summer and sunset drives but what about **stargazing**?? like actual songs where its just about sitting outside late at night and watching the sky?? i feel like theres this whole mood that gets overlooked. weve got 'starry starry night' but thats more about van gogh than the actual stars. idk man i want some tunes for when youre out in the middle of nowhere and its just YOU and the universe. feel free to drop recs if youve got em also not tryna be cheesy here but if youve ever seen the milky way for real with no light pollution lemme know where bc ive only seen it once and it was WILD. anyway yeah songs about stars. go.

Re-watching movies isn't my thing but I can make an exception if the movie is very good. The only movie I've rewatched recently is Avengers : Infinity Wars. It's the best Marvels movies.

Do you like re-watching movies?

Since the pandemic of COVID, I started taking my hygiene really very serious. I wash my hands as often as possible and keep my hand sanitizers close by. My health is a big priority I don't joke with.

Do you wash your hands regularly?

seriously, who even uses these? theyre always stiff, unreliable, or just get in the way when youre trying to scroll normally. i get that some mice have them as a 'feature' but its such a niche use case and doesnt justify the annoyance every time i see someone claim its a must-have im like... for what? spreadsheets? even then ctrl+arrow keys are faster. the only thing worse is when they try to map them to volume or browser back/forward and it just misfires half the time. if youre modding a mouse and considering keeping the tilt, just... dont. youll thank yourself later. anyone else rip these out of their mice or am i the only one who thinks theyre more trouble than theyre worth?

Everyone talks about Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, and Dimebag Darrell.

Who's a guitarist that deserves way more recognition than they get?

Bonus points if you drop a song recommendation.
