like seriously... it feels like half the time its just making everything sound muddy and you cant even tell whos singing. is it supposed to make it more 'atmospheric' or something? cuz most of the time i just wanna hear the music clear, not like im in a cave. dont get me wrong, i get why its used in studio stuff, but live? it just seems like overkill. or maybe im just going to the wrong venues... idk man, what do yall think?

noticed this the other day — so many rock and alt songs are about time passing, running out of time, wanting time to stop, or just being stuck in a moment like its this huge recurring theme across decades. is it just cause its universal or is there something about the way rock riffs and time-based lyrics click together? feels like its everywhere from zeppelin to nirvana to modern stuff. anyone else pick up on this or is it just me overthinking again?

The 2026 edition of Dromedary Records’ Dromfest happens Labor Day Weekend (September 4-6) at The Avalon Lounge in Catskill, NY. As usual, the lineup is full of ’80s/’90s indie rock and tickets are on sale.

Friday (9/4) is headlined by Boston college rock greats Dumptruck, plus Consonant and Karen Schoemer and her “August” Band.

Saturday (9/5) is headlined by Cincinnati legends Wussy, and the lineup also includes Antietam, Doug Gillard, Moviola, Via, Martha’s Vineyard Ferries, Barbara Manning, Stuyvesant, The Human Hearts, Tiny Blue Ghost, and P.G. Six.

Sunday (9/6): has Come as headliners, plus Scrawl, Austin noise rockers Nice Strong Arm (who haven’t played live in a long time), Hypnolovewheel, Sleepyhead, Beth Kaplan, French/Cell, Purple Ivy Shadows, R.B. Korbet, Creative Writing, and Sweet Harm.

Synthpop icons Soft Cell have shared full details of their final album Danceteria which will be out September 25 via Republic of Music. It was finished last year before co-founder Dave Ball passed away in October. “There can be no more recordings of Soft Cell without Dave, it would not be possible,” says frontman Marc Almond. “The sad reality is that Dave Ball was half of Soft Cell, and live work aside, I can’t write Soft Cell songs without him.”

“The ‘Danceteria’ album reflects what we were going through as Brits in New York,” says Almond. “We arrived there in 1981 with a bunch of songs that were initially written about London and Leeds. They were songs that reflected the greyness and repression of Margaret Thatcher’s Britain. But once we hit New York, the same songs became infused with a fresh, streetwise sensibility. We were in the clubs, where ecstasy was available for the first time, and we felt privileged to be part of that secret. Our music took on a hybrid quality. We were quintessentially British, but we felt that we were also an honorary American band. So it feels right that the last Soft Cell album is invested in those myths and stories. It brings everything full circle for us, and it’s a fitting tribute to Dave.”

The album includes this year’s single “Out Come the Freaks,” a cover of Was (Not Was)’s cult banger, and the new single is Danceteria‘s title track which is set at NYC’s legendary ’80s club. You can watch the video below.

Farm Aid has announced its 2026 edition which will happen September 26 in Virginia Beach. This will be the first time the charity festival has been in that city and tickets go on presale on Wednesday, June 10 at 10 AM Eastern, with the general on-sale starting Friday, June 12 at 10 AM.

The 2026 lineup includes Farm Aid founders Willie Nelson, Neil Young (& The Chrome Hearts) and John Mellencamp, plus Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Margo Price, Nathaniel Rateliff, Turnpike Troubadours, Lukas Nelson, Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, Jesse Welles, Sierra Ferrell, Mon Rovîa, I’m With Her, Amythyst Kiah, Lily Meola and Chris Pierce.

“Family farmers grow our food and strengthen our communities. And when farmers struggle like they are now, communities feel it too,” says Willie Nelson. “The challenges farmers face threaten their livelihoods and put all of us at risk. lol so i was rewatching baby driver the other day and it hit me how much the music just makes that movie?? like it’s not even about the plot at some points it’s just the way the scenes are timed to the tracks anyway it got me thinking about other movies where the soundtrack is so good it kinda becomes a character of its own... guardian of the galaxy does this too right?? like, or amadeus if you wanna get a little artsy haha what are some others yall can think of where the music feels as important as the story?? lowkey i feel like this could be a whole playlist-building exercise omg

Neko Case has announced fall tour dates in further support of last year’s great Neon Grey Midnight Green. Most dates are with old friend and New Pornographers bandmate Dan Bejar who will be playing solo as Destroyer. Dates kick off October 15 in Lexington, MA and include a special Nashville show at the Ryman Auditoriom with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and more to be announced. All dates are listed below.

There is no NYC show proper, but she and Destroyer play Poughkeepsie’s Bardavon 1869 Opera House on October 22. Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, June 12 at 10 AM local time.

In other news, the stage musical adaptation of 1991 film Thelma & Louise — which features a book by original screenwriter Callie Khouri and score and songs by Neko Case — will make its world premiere this fall at The Young Vic in London, running from September 3 through October 24. Having wrapped up their tour with Joyce Manor last month, Militarie Gun have announced a new round of North American shows. They’ll sell $20 tickets across all 27 dates of their “20 Songs for 20 Dollars” tour, which is with Softcult, Shady Nasty, and Dazy.

“The world is falling apart and everyone is broke, so we’re bringing you 20 Songs for 20 Dollars,” Ian Shelton says. “We can’t control ticketing fees, but we can control whether or not the ticket is affordable to begin with. We’re excited to finally do something we’ve been talking about for a long time.”

NYC misses out this time, as Militarie Gun are on the CBGB Fest lineup, but the tour does hit Austin, Dallas, Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Nashville, Washington Dc, Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and more. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 12 at 10 AM local time.

Militarie Gun are currently on tour in Europe, and they also have shows supporting The Sex Pistols ft. Frank Carter later in the fall. See all dates below.

Last month Underoath announced they’d play their 2006 album Define the Great Line in full at Furnace Fest, and now they’ve revealed a full 20th anniversary tour for the album. August Burns Red, Atreyu, As Cities Burn, and Emery open the shows, varying by date, and Chris Dudley says, “What this album has meant to us, and so many others, over the past 20 years is hard to quantify. It gave us permission to be ourselves. It sent us around the world. It gave people the freedom to say (and scream) the things out loud they had buried deep. It will outlive us. We still play these songs on stage 20 years later and get those chills. The opportunity to devote an entire tour to presenting this album in the best way it ever has been, alongside friends we’ve had since before it was released, is going to be bucket list material for us.”

The shows begin on November 5 in St. Louis and run through December, with a few dates still TBA, and an NYC show at Brooklyn Paramount on December 8 with August Burns Red, Atreyu, and Emery. Tickets to all dates go on sale Friday, June 12 at 10 AM local, with various presales starting Tuesday, June 9 at 12 PM local.

We named Define the Great Line one of 15 seminal albums from metalcore’s second wave (2000-2010), and Andrew wrote:

Underoath scored one of melodic metalcore’s biggest mainstream breakthroughs with 2004’s They’re Only Chasing Safety — their fourth album and first with lead screamer Spencer Chamberlain (who replaced Dallas Taylor, who went on to front the Southern rock-tinged metalcore band Maylene and the Sons of Disaster) — but it was that album’s darker, heavier, more experimental followup that found Underoath at their creative peak. Outside of lead single “Writing on the Walls,” almost nothing on Define the Great Line scans as “radio-friendly.” Spencer had really settled into his role as frontman for this album, and he brought his own vocal and lyrical style to the band rather than trying to fill the shoes of Dallas Taylor, who the previous album had at least partially been written with. His screams were more guttural on this record, and his lyricism grappled with faith in a way that was extremely personal and never felt like stereotypical Christian metalcore. The depth in the lyricism was matched by a wide range of musical influences, which included bone-crushing metalcore, atmospheric post-metal, industrial interludes, and more. In place of usual producer James Paul Wisner was Killswitch Engage’s Adam Dutkiewicz and The Chariot collaborator Matt Goldman, and that new team helped Underoath achieve the more cavernous sound that these songs demanded. It was an album that made you forget everything you thought you knew about Underoath, elevated them above the endless sea of “scene” bands, and set the tone for the second and best chapter of their career.

We’ve been looking forward to the third proper Chat Pile album, which follows their 2025 collaboration with Hayden Pedigo, In the Earth Again, and after covering Nirvana on a Sub Pop single in February, they’ve announced Who Loves the Sun, due out on September 4 via The Flenser (pre-order on vinyl). “This record focuses on my grievances with the modern world,” vocalist Ray B. says. “AI, genocide, climate change, the power elite, $$$$ hoarding pigs— all that shit fucks up your life and mine. The band is definitely stretching out their abilities on the album and I too felt inspired to go further— as a huge fan of Boston, I like to think Brad Delp is somewhere up there, smiling down, as I take the layering to new heights, but who can say? We have fun with it.”

Bassist Stin adds “This album contains a healthy dose of the usual Chat Pile airing of grievances against the state of the world, but deeper at it’s heart I feel Who Loves the Sun is grappling with the challenges of trying to keep one’s humanity in a time of extreme anti-humanity.”

The first single is “Deep Blue.” Stin says it’s “the first track we wrote for the album and the one that helped set the tone for the whole thing. I personally love this because it sounds like Chat Pile doing a Billy Squire song. It’s our ‘Lonely is the Night,’ which is actually a fake Led Zeppelin song so who knows what the hell we’re actually doing here?”

Ray adds, “Technology is rapidly ruining our lives, all promise seemingly squandered on the worst things, like killing people, wasting resources, destroying art- shrinking our brains and pulling us further apart than ever before.”

Chat Pile are on tour in Australia and New Zealand now, and have shows in Europe in August. They’ve now announced North American shows in the fall, beginning in September and running through November. They’ll be joined by Soul Glo, Prize Horse, Virga, and Shallowater, varying by show, and you can see all dates below.

The NYC show is at Brooklyn Steel on November 10 with Soul Glo and Shallowater. Tickets for that and all dates go on sale Friday, June 12 at 10 AM local.
