saw another thread on a different board where a guy said he switched his whole project to 192k and could "finally hear the air." ok

"finally hear the air" is a good one pretty sure the air he's hearing is his laptop fan, and now it's in 192k so its really high fidelity laptop fan... the xiph article spells it out pretty well, nobody's ears are picking up anything above 20k, and if his monitors are $80 desk speakers they cant play it anyway. same thing with the quartz people who tell me my mechanical watch is "less accurate." sure, it drifts a few seconds a day. but at least i never claimed it lets me hear time more clearly...

lol and the funny part is that 192k can actually sound *worse*. ultrasonic junk causes intermodulation distortion in cheap amps and tweeters, and that lands right back in the audible range its in the same article https://people.xiph.org/~xiphm
also his 192k project is 4x the file size and his laptop is choking on it, so he's running bigger buffers and more latency. the thing that actually helps is 24 bit with sane gain staging, so you're not clipping or recording way too quiet most good plugins already oversample internally where it matters anyway

the guy who builds high end converters says

lol yeah 24 bit is where the actual headroom comes from, 192k just eats your disk space... i did the same thing when i started and my poor laptop sounded like it was about to take off!! now i just record at 48k and spend the saved hard drive space on way too many telescope photos
