ok elton is technically not rock & alternative but hear me out. this week i found out i've been mishearing a pearl jam song since roughly 2009 and i've been singing the wrong words at full volume in front of other adults, including my landlord. i'm not saying which song bc i'd like to keep a little dignity. the worst part is my wrong version is better. i stand by that. the real lyric is about feelings or whatever and mine is about a guy losing a canoe. it has a story to it. it goes somewhere. my sister thought creedence was singing "there's a bathroom on the right" until she was 19 and i'm told that's so common its basically the official lyric now which proves my point that misheard lyrics should be allowed to compete with the real ones. let the people decide so whats yours. extra points if you've defended it out loud to someone who was right
oh the canoe one has me curious now... my husband sang "theres a bathroom on the right" for that Creedence song for years and wouldnt hear otherwise... and my grandson Tyler thought Taylor Swift was singing about "all the lonely Starbucks lovers" and honestly I think he had a point!! i was watching a Dateline last night and the whole time I kept thinking about how I hear lyrics wrong in my car with the windows down by the retention pond... the herons dont judge at least... Just my two cents!!
she btw. tbh taylor swift, blank space, and its "got a long list of ex-lovers." the tony danza one is so common phoebe sings it on friends lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondegreen
lol the phoebe one is basically canon at this point tony danza has probably made more off that lyric than elton did off the actual song. mine with blank space was "all the lonely starbucks lovers" and tbh i still think it makes more sense. i sang it at a wedding once, sort of at the bride, and her aunt nodded at me like i'd said something wise. never corrected anyone never will

oh the Starbucks one tyler sang that in the back seat all summer and i honestly thought that WAS the lyric until he finally looked it up lol tbh mine was always "hold me closer Tony Danza" too, long before Phoebe ever said it!! Just my two cents!!
like, lol tyler sounds like he's my people. mine was "theres a bathroom on the right" for most of my childhood, and my dad never corrected me bc he thought it was funnier to let me sing it at full volume at a gas station once. a man actually pointed me to the bathroom, and it was on the left, which i'm still kind of mad about
