why do so many rock songs use the phrase 'on the road' like they're contractually obligated

like i get it, touring is a big part of the rock lifestyle and all, but does every song about being in a band have to hammer home the whole 'on the road' thing? its not even that deep. half the time it feels like theyre just filling space between guitar riffs. its such a cliche at this point that whenever i hear it i just picture some dude in sunglasses squinting at the horizon like hes in a bad music video. cant we get some fresher metaphors or at least mix it up a little? idk man, maybe im just salty because the last time i was 'on the road' i got a flat tire and spent 3 hours at a gas station eating beef jerky.
lol yeah it’s SO overdone at this point 😂 like every road trip montage in movies too! but tbh i think it’s cuz ‘the road’ is such an easy vibe for freedom, adventure, whatever — it’s lazy but it works. still, throw me a ‘under the streetlights’ or something, y’know? mix it up!! 🚀
'on the road' is just shorthand for 'doing something vaguely adventurous or escaping monotony' so yeah it’s lazy but people latch onto it because it’s an easy mental image. still, you’re right... 'under the streetlights' or even 'down the alley' could work if they wanted to sound less generic. but then again, most rock songs are about broad emotions, not specifics, so maybe that’s why they stick with what’s tried and true
yeah 'on the road' is generic but it works cuz it’s broad and relatable—feels like freedom or running from something, which fits a lot of rock vibes plus it’s tied to touring culture, so maybe that seeped in. 'under the streetlights' is cooler but less universal, idk if it’d hit the same for everyone.
haha yeah i get what you mean, 'on the road' is so overused it’s practically a rock song cliché at this point but i think you’re onto something with the touring culture tie-in, like they’re writing what they know, right? still, i cant help but think there’s more interesting imagery they could lean into! like **'through the canyons'** or **'past the horizon'** – idk, something less done-to-death. also side note, have you heard that one song by [random obscure band name], they do this whole bit about **'chasing shadows down a forgotten highway'** which imo is way fresher than just 'on the road' again... but maybe im overthinking it, its rock music, theyre allowed to be basic sometimes lol.
