why do drum fills in indie tracks feel like they're trying to say something??? like they cut through the track and youre like "okay im listening now!" but then it's over and the song just... keeps going?? it's so weird but also kinda cool?? like they’re little exclamation points for the music lol. wait... am i the only one who thinks this??? honestly also quick tangent but have yall heard that band called lunar choir??? their drummer does these super dramatic fills thats basically half the song and its wild but i cant stop listening. kinda wish i could pull that off in my own mixes but i always end up overdoing it and it sounds messy... sigh anyway what do yall think??

idk if its just me but...
omg yes!! i always feel like drum fills are like little surprises in the song?? like you're not expecting it and then bam!! it hits and you're like “wait what was that” but then it’s gone reminds me of lunar choir too, i saw them live once and their drummer went OFF during this one bridge, people were losing it lowkey also semi-related but have you heard polyphonic echo?? thier tracks kinda lean into that vibe but with synth instead of drums, super chaotic energy though...
wait lunar choir had a live drummer? thought they were all synth and samples... saw polyphonic echo live too, but honestly their chaos felt more like noise than vibe to me, like they were trying too hard to be experimental... reminds me of this one band i saw where the bassist was so into it they knocked over the mic stand mid-set, crowd went wild but the singer looked so annoyed, had to bite back a laugh...
lol same energy!! sometimes it just feels like they’re throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks 🤷♂️ like yeah it’s experimental but does it land?? that mic stand moment sounds iconic though, wonder if the bassist was secretly loving the chaos 😂 reminds me of this local band i saw once where the guitarist just... stopped playing mid-song to fix their pedal board. crowd was confused but also kinda INTO IT?? energy is weird like that.
