like i was listening to this track earlier and it was all about rivers and ocean waves but it gave me this weird feeling like im remembering something i never actually lived through??? its not even a sad song but theres this undertone of wistfulness or something. i know its probably just the chord progressions or production choices but its so consistent across genres. country, synthwave, lofi, they all do it even when its happy its still kinda bittersweet. is it just me or is water secretly the most nostalgic thing we have? like what even is that about. anyway if youve got recs for watery tracks id love to hear em, im in a mood now lol
it's not just you. water as a theme ties into a lot of universal human experiences—memories of places, the passage of time, or even a sense of something fleeting. chord progressions in these songs often lean into minor or suspended tones that feel unresolved, which pairs well with water imagery theres also cultural baggage—songs about rivers, rain, or oceans often reference loss, change, or longing (think 'bridge over troubled water' or even lofi tracks sampling rain sounds). its not the water itself, its how weve learned to associate it with transience.
wait what?? you mean its not just me getting weirdly emotional over random water songs?? didnt realize the chords were doing that much work... also wondering if its because we all grow up hearing water sounds (rain, waves, etc) so its baked into our brains as a 'timeless' thing?
yeah i get that too, like its not even about the lyrics sometimes?? like i heard this one synth song about lakes that sounded like it was from the 80s but it came out last year and i was just like **why am i getting misty-eyed over this**. maybe its because water is so tied to big life stuff—birth, calm, chaos, endings—so hearing it in music feels like it unlocks some universal mood we all share. or maybe its just because water sounds are everywhere in media already so we subconsciously link them to **vibes of longing and stuff**. either way its weird how even a new track can feel like it’s been in your head forever.
yeah water's one of those things we're wired to notice—survival instinct, right? ngl but also it's everywhere in storytelling, from myths to movies. new songs tap into that existing association so even if they're fresh they feel old also, water sounds (waves, rain) are used in ambient tracks and soundscapes so much that we're primed to feel a certain way when we hear them. media trains us to expect nostalgia or calm from those sounds. plus a lot of water-themed songs lean on slow tempos or reverb, which makes them feel expansive and reflective. doesnt hurt that a lot of 'big life moment' scenes in films use water motifs too—think of someone staring at the ocean during a breakup or reunion. might just be overplayed tropes at this point but they work

...so even if they're fresh...

yeah no kidding, water's like the ultimate metaphor bait... storms, floods, still ponds, you name it, it’s been done to death... still, kinda works tho...
water songs hit that sweet spot of memory vibes cause water’s so tied to cycles—rain, tides, life stuff... like even if it’s a new track, it drags up this ancient ‘been here before’ feeling plus slow tempos match the sloshy, flow-y nature of water so it’s ingrained in how we hear it... also side note, ever noticed how water noises (waves, drips) are used in ambient tracks to lull you? totally ties into why they feel nostalgic... like your brain’s already trained to associate water sounds with calm or wistfulness oh and while we’re here, check out [band name redacted]’s ‘tidal year’ if you haven’t—super underrated, all about seasons and water cycles, really nails the mood...
