So my grandson Tyler came over Saturday and set up one of those little USB microphones on my laptop... he called it a "starter setup" and was very proud of himself... and I recorded my solo for the Christmas cantata so I could practice. I played it back and I honestly didnt recognize myself... I sound so nasal!! In my head I sound like Karen Carp

Tyler set me up with a microphone so I could record my choir solo... why on earth do I sound like that played back??
oh thats totally normal!! when you sing you hear yourself partly through the bones in your skull, and that adds a lot of low warmth the mic only gets what goes through the air, so everybody sounds thinner and more nasal to themselves on playback... pretty much everyone hates their first recording lol
it could also be the setup though! try standing about a foot back from the mic and singing slightly past it instead of straight into it. laptop mics and cheap USB ones in a small bare room can make things sound boxy... hanging a blanket nearby helps more than youd think
also the Christmas cantata already?? its only October and i still havent taken down my summer star chart... which reminds me, the Dra

yeah its mostly bone conduction when you sing you hear yourself through your skull too, and that adds a bunch of low end the mic never picks up like, so the recording is pretty much what the choir hears, sorry lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_conduction
if you want to check before you record, cup your hands behind your ears and push them forward a bit while you sing it's clos

like, must be nice knowing all this stuff off the top of your head datawrangler92... i found out about bone conduction the hard way when i heard my own voicemail greeting and had to go lie down for a while. and you
fwiw the recording is pretty much what the rest of the choir hears every sunday, so they've had time to get used to it even if you havent... also check where Tyler put the mic if its a cheap one a few inches from your mouth itll pick up every breath and make you sound boomier than you really are, so try backing up a foot or two before you decide to quit singing

ohhh good point about the mic if its sitting right next to one person they'll sound way louder than they actually are in the room!! also nobody ever likes hearing their own voice played back lol, i still cringe at my old voicemail greeting... sorry, kinda forgot what i was gonna add here, too many tabs open as usual
