Is tasteful vandalism ever actually art?

so last week someone stuck a tiny knitted scarf on the bronze goose outside my bank and i swear it made my whole tuesday. like, my neighbor called it vandalism and wanted to call somebody about it a knitted goose scarf. i think theres a line somewhere between banksy and some guy keying a honda, but i cant tell you where it is. ngl vote and then fight about it in the comments, thats what theyre for
yarn bombing is the best kind of vandalism because it literally comes off with scissors!! nobody's honda is getting knitted lol. my vote is that if it washes off or snips off and doesnt hurt anything it's probably art... if it needs a sandblaster it's probably not

side note, i started a knitting project in 2023 and its still a sad little half scarf in a bin somewhere so whoever did that goose has my full respect. also the first person to really popularize yarn bombing was this group in houston called knitta please around 2005, which is a great name

also random but there's a crater on mercury named after banksy?? or wait no... i think i'm mixing it up with the ones named after artists like rembrandt and beethoven mercury's craters are all named after dead artists and musicians, so banksy would have to wait anyway lol

well I'll agree with you as long as whoever does it comes back and snips it off when it gets all soggy and gray there's a lamppost by the retention pond that's had the same moldy sweater on it since 2022 and even the herons look at it funny!! my grandson Tyler thinks it's art though so what do I know... just my two cents!!

yarn bombing is the best kind of vandalism because it literally comes off with scissors!

lol until the city decides your tree cozy is unpermitted signage. my town actually has an ordinance about "attachments to public fixtures" and i guarantee whoever wrote it never pictured knitting wool also holds water and can rot bark if it's left up long enough, so it's not totally harmless. still way better than spray paint though
PurpleFencepost did you just call a TREE COZY "signage"?? 😱 the AUDACITY. its a sweater for a tree!!! it isnt advertising anything except LOVE and WARMTH 🧶🌳 also your post cut off at "i guarantee who" and now i N

yeah mercury gets the dead artists, beethoven and rembrandt are both there dont forget the writers too, theres a tolkien crater now... still waiting on one for whoever designed the first decent mechanical watch movement but i'm not holding my breath
wait how did we get from yarn bombing to mercury craters. tbh naming a crater after tolkien is kind of the same thing, just slapping your favorite guy's name on a rock nobody asked you to label. at least the moldy lamppost sweater does something for the herons, mercury doesnt care what we call its holes
well I don't know that teh herons care much either the big one at our pond stood right under that soggy yarn thing on the lamppost for about a week and never looked up once lol... my problem is the same one I have with the carts at Publix, somebody leaves it out there and just figures someone else will deal with it later... at least a crater name doesn

omg herons are the best at not caring about anything!! ours just stands there like a lawn ornament for hours... wait, your post got cut off though, whats the problem with the sa... something?? now im curious lol

and random but theres a heron constellation in some star lore, i think? or maybe im mixing it up with Grus the crane again... i do that a lot
not sure what i was even typing there, my phone eats half my posts but the actual problem is the city. they'll fine you $150 for chalk on the sidewalk under the "surface defacement" ordinance, which washes off the first time it rains, but a moldy sweater on city property for four years is apparently fine since nobody can figure out whose department lampposts belong to... so to answer the thread, i guess it's art if parks and rec doesnt have a form for it
lol the moldy sweater thing is yarn bombing, and it's got a whole wikipedia page now https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki
a wikipedia page is the final stage of any vandalism tbh. first it's a crime, then it's a nuisance, then some guy with a lanyard is giving walking tours of it my aunt got yelled at for knitting a cozy onto a bike rack in 2009 and now the same city pays people to do it, she's still mad about that
your aunt has every right to still be mad. in 2009 it was a misdemeanor and now its probably a line item in the parks budget with a "community engagement coordinator" attached to it. as far as i can tell the only difference between vandalism and art around here is whether you filed the permit in triplicate and waited six to eight weeks...
lol the triplicate thing is so real!! our town spent like two years approving a mural for the water tower... meanwhile somebody painted Saturn on a storm drain overn

...city pays people to do it,...

lol the city here actually has an ordinance about "unauthorized textile attachments to municipal fixtures." somebody sat in a meeting and wrote that on purpose meanwhile the potholes on my street have been there long enough to get their own walking tour...
