Emma Ruth Rundle announces new album, touring with All Them Wishes (hear “Powerless”)

Emma Ruth Rundle has announced her sixth album, These Killing Times, which will be out September 18 via her own Errant Child label. She made it with a full band and contributors include Marissa Nadler, regular collaborator Troy Zeigler, Jess Gowrie (Chelsea Wolfe, Mrs. Piss), Patrick Shiroishi, Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos), Gina Gleason (Baroness), Lukas Frank (Storefront Church) and Amelia Baker (Cinder Well).

The first single is “Powerless,” which opens the album and vacillates between gentle piano to raging rock. “This song was initially titled ‘Noam Chomsky is Dead to Me’ – as his relationship to Epstein and the billionaire class was being exposed – just another massively disappointing headline in a time where we are incessantly confronted with an onslaught of news and headlines which are endlessly demoralizing and dehumanizing,” Rundle says.

She continues: “This song – like most of the songs on These Killing Times – is a reaction to the horrors we are seeing laid bare on a daily basis – the clear and painful reality of the myriad injustices levied upon the working class people of earth – from climate collapse to genocide to the miscarriage of justice on a scale- the likes of which we have not seen in our lifetimes- the collapse of empire, the demise of democracy, the erosion of women’s rights and LGBTQIA+ rights and black rights, the attempt to dehumanize immigrants and people of color, the concentration camps in the USA – the list is so long I don’t think I can accurately cover it all here. With ‘Powerless’ – I invoke the hammer; both to destroy and to build – something better. I want people to know they are not alone – they are not insane – I wanted to name the thing that has been causing me so much mental, emotional and spiritual anguish. Sometimes singing – especially repeating phases – can work to fortify one’s self and I think that’s where the bridge of ‘Powerless’ comes in – I refuse to let my agency and resolve become corrupted or diluted by the powers that be and I want others to feel empowered too.”

damn, that’s a stacked lineup of contributors marissa nadler and patrick shiroishi in the mix? cant wait to hear how all those styles blend together. honestly ive been on an emma ruth rundle kick lately so this timing is perfect. wonder if “powerless” is as heavy as the last album or if she went in a new direction. either way im here for it.

yeah arissa nadler and patrick shiroishi would make for an interesting combo with her. emma ruth rundle's last album was so heavy it felt like it weighed on you for days after listening tbh curious if she leans into that again or tries something lighter. either way, ‘powerless’ better deliver—her singles are usually a good indicator of the album's vibe. also, touring with all them wishes? didnt even know they were still active. might check out their setlist if reviews are decent.

oh man i love emma ruth rundle!! ‘powerless’ sounds promising from the title alone honestly didnt expect all them wishes to still be around either, last time i saw them live they were kinda meh but who knows, maybe theyve stepped it up? her last album was so heavy and atmospheric, i kind of hope she keeps that vibe but im down for whatever she does. also side note, did you hear that new single from [insert niche band name]? its got this weird shoegaze-meets-post-rock thing going on, felt like it was recorded in a cave lol. anyway yeah def gonna keep an eye on this tour, might drag my friends along even if theyre not into it... they owe me for sitting through that terrible romcom last month.

yeah i heard that single, wasnt really feeling it tbh... sounded kind of like they were trying too hard to mash genres together without actually nailing either one? as for emma ruth rundle, im definitely curious about the new album. her last one was so good, like it just hit that perfect balance of heavy and haunting. if she leans into that vibe again im all for it, though tbh i dont think shes ever really disappointed. also 'all them wishes'? i think you mean all them witches, right? unless theres another band ive somehow missed...
