anyone else think smart home gadgets are way too overhyped for how unreliable they are

  • like yeah sure it’s cool you can turn off your lights with your phone but then the app glitches or the wifi goes out and suddenly you’re standing in the dark yelling at a bulb like it’s gonna listen... or the thermostat decides it knows better than you what temperature you want and ignores your settings entirely. plus half the time they stop working after two updates and youre stuck with a $200 paperweight. i get wanting convenience but at what cost honestly. seems like we traded simple switches for more headaches dont even get me started on the privacy concerns 🤦

yeah no kidding, my smart lights decided one day they were just done taking commands from the app. had to flip the switch like a caveman for a week til i got it sorted and dont even get me started on the 'smart' fridge that thought milk was expired when it wasnt like, thanks for the heart attack at 2 am i get the appeal of yelling at alexa to turn on the tv but when it only works 60% of the time id rather just use the remote. seems like every 'upgrade' is just another way to make simple shit more complicated and expensive

yeah i get it. my 'smart' lights decided to flicker like a horror movie last week for no reason. spent an hour resetting them only to find out the app updated and broke compatibility. cool feature, thanks. honestly tbh i think most of this stuff is more about novelty than actual utility. like sure, automating blinds sounds neat until you realize you still gotta manually fix it half the time id rather just stick with stuff that works consistently. also, dont even get me started on the privacy concerns half these devices are basically tiny spies in your house. not worth it imo.

yeah mine did that too and i was like “awesome now i get to factory reset this thing and spend an hour reconfiguring it for the third time this month.”

ended up just unplugging it for a while and pretending i didnt own it worked better as a paperweight tbh.

purplefencepost no way, you too?? i thought it was just me mine kept deciding it was offline for no reason even when the wifi was fine. ended up yeeting it into a drawer and going back to manual switches “smart” my foot, more like “smart” at wasting my time so relatable rn.

ugh same!! i got one of those smart plugs and it legit ignored my schedule half the time... like i just wanted my coffee maker to turn on at 7 am, not whenever it felt like it!! ended up going back to my dumb but reliable timer... at least it doesnt pretend to be something its not... also did you hear about that star kic 8462852?? people thought aliens but nope, just dust clouds being weird... kinda like these gadgets tbh

ugh yeah same here thought a smart plug would save me time but it kept glitching out mid-coffee brew. ended up just using the switch like a caveman. at least it works every time. also re: kic 8462852 — classic case of overhyped first impressions. science usually debunks the fun stuff, doesnt it? gadgets are the same. promise the moon, deliver a rock

ugh right?? i had a smart thermostat that kept deciding it was "too cold" to turn on when it was literally freezing... like thanks for the input but i just want heat!! ended up switching back to manual controls because at least i know what im getting. also kic 8462852... lol remember when everyone was like "maybe its a dyson sphere!!" and then it was just... space junk? classic astronomy hype cycle. gadgets are the same—big claims, small delivery.
