Hugh Laurie has kickstarted a debate on social media after hitting back at a critique of House, where one X/Twitter user claimed it had the “same narrative every episode”.
The English actor, who starred in the medical drama from 2004 to 2012, did not mince words when responding to a post by freelance journalist Janet Murray over the weekend. She had written that the show had the “same narrative every episode” and relied on formulaic, repetitive storytelling. “Patient has mysterious illness,” she wrote by way of example.
“Hugh Laurie (House) gets diagnosis wrong. Patient nearly dies. Hugh Laurie gets diagnosis wrong again. Gets threatened with being fired. Patient nearly dies again. Hugh Laurie has last minute leftfield idea. Gets diagnosis right. Doesn’t get fired.”
She concluded, “Eight seasons of this?” to which Laurie replied: “Thanks for your critique, Janet. We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only six minutes long.
“NBC weren’t happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn’t happy.”
He went on: “One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what?? The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn’t meant for you.”
Laurie rounded off his post by quipping, “Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!”
Murray took take things in good spirits, writing this morning (Monday June 8): “Woken up to a few new followers this morning. Who may be disappointed to learn that TV reviews are not usually my forte. Plus I may now be too busy working on my first novel.”
Users on X, however, seems divided by the post. While some said they wanted “a new season of House dissecting Tweets”, and revelled in the way he “turned a mundane twitter mini rant into something interesting”, others felt his response had been over the top.
“The only mystery left is why a man who once played the world’s most arrogant doctor is now cosplaying the world’s most fragile one on Twitter,” wrote one user.
Comedian and writer David Baddiel also weighed in on the thread, asking: “Why can’t HL offer an opinion on her opinion? On this forum which is just opinions?”

Murray herself replied, and was in agreement, but highlighted the disproportionate amount of trolling she’d received after Laurie engaged with her post.
“Hugh Laurie is perfectly entitled to have an opinion on my opinion,” she wrote. “And very amusing it was too. The only downside of being quote-tweeted to 1.2 million followers is discovering quite how many strangers are willing to call a woman a c**t (and similar) over a light-hearted comment about a TV show. Which is clearly much loved by fans. But ho hum.”
Laurie received two Golden Globe Awards for his work on the show, which wrapped over a decade ago. He then went on to star in Veep and The Night Manager, and is soon set to feature in an adaptation of John le Carré’s Legacy of Spies.

like, i was blasting this one track earlier today on my way to grab groceries (yeah, riveting life i lead) and it hit *so* differently compared to when i played it at home. honestly something about the rhythm lining up with the road noise and the scenery whizzing by just makes it feel like the song was made for that exact moment and its not even a road trip song or anything, just a random indie track with some guitar and synths idk if its the bass vibrating through the car or the fact that youre kind of in this weird headspace when youre driving — half autopilot, half zoning out — but it always feels more cinematic even songs i dont normally care about suddenly feel epic when im doing 60 on the highway. anyone else get this or am i just weird for thinking my car is a better sound system than my actual speakers?

like seriously its 2026 and weve got a million ways to express amusement or indifference but half the time someone types 'lol' and you just know theyre sitting there stone-faced probably scrolling with one hand eating chips with the other im guilty of it too dont get me wrong but at least im aware its a reflex at this point. its like saying 'cool' when you mean 'whatever' or typing 'haha' when its not even mildly funny. idk maybe im overthinking it but sometimes i wish we could all just admit were not laughing and use something else. like emojis are right there. or just say nothing its fine. gotta admit though its kinda funny how attached we are to these ancient internet habits. ...

is it just me or does every other ambient/lofi track have rain or wind samples in the background lately? like yeah theyre nice but its starting to feel like a crutch. are people just googling 'calm rain sounds' and slapping it under their beats or is there some deeper reason im missing? lowkey i get that it sets a vibe but it feels overdone at this point. tbh also if youre gonna use weather sounds at least make them subtle. theres this one track i heard where the rain was so loud it drowned out the melody and i couldnt tell if it was intentional or just bad mixing. anyone else feel this way or is it just me being picky about production trends?
