Martha Reeves & the Vandellas 'Ridin' High' artwork - Courtesy: UMG

Martha Reeves & the Vandellas – with the lead singer’s surname recently added to the group name – started 1968 with the song that turned out to be their final R&B top tenner. “Honey Chile” also climbed to No.11 on the pop chart and was followed by the funky “I Promise To Wait My Love,” a Top 40 hit on the soul side.

On June 1, 1968, Ridin’ High, the album that contained both of those singles and even the Top 20 soul hit before that, “Love Bug Leave My Heart Alone,” made both the pop and R&B charts. In the month the album was released, the group played at the Copacabana in New York.

The album, on Motown’s Gordy label, was the group’s first studio set not to benefit from the significant songwriting input of Brian and Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier, who had just left to set up their own Invictus and Hot Wax labels. Their only song on the album was one of its most accomplished, “Leave It In The Hands Of Love.” The LP also featured the first vocal contribution of Martha’s sister Lois, who was in the process of replacing Betty Kelly in the line-up.

Vandellas sing Bacharach & David

Various new writers contributed to Ridin’ High, but the album saw the group looking to two proven copyrights from the recent songbook of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. They put a Motown twist on “(There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me” and “I Say A Little Prayer.” Reeves and the Vandellas also turned their hands to another recent No.1 US smash for Lulu, Don Black, and Mark London’s “To Sir With Love.”

Yet another single from Ridin’ High would be released by Motown in the spring of 1969, “(We’ve Got) Honey Love,” which reached the R&B Top 30. In a surprising postscript, the boyfriend-away-at-the-war song “Forget Me Not” – the flipside of “I Promise To Wait My Love” in the US – was released as a UK single fully three years after its LP appearance, and went all the way to No.11.

Listen to Ridin’ High.

John Barnes joined Peter Hook on stage in Manchester to perform his rap from New Order’s ‘World In Motion’ – watch below.

The former Joy Division and New Order bassist was playing at the Manchester Academy last night (June 4) to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sex Pistols’ legendary show in the city, and he welcomed England legend Barnes onto the stage for a rendition of the 1990 World Cup anthem.

Hook’s epic 35-track performance saw him take a chronological trip through his entire career, and Barnes joined him at the halfway point during the song that became inextricably linked to England’s run to the semi-finals of Italia ‘90, and also New Order’s only Number One single.

Barnes wrote and performed the rap himself back in 1990, with legend having it that he recorded it in a single take. Check out footage of the 2026 version here:

You've got to hold and give, but do it at the right time

Peter Hook & The Light at the Academy World In Motion drops…and out walks John Barnes to deliver that verse.

— Madchester (@madchester_mdcr) June 5, 2026

Earlier this week, Barnes revealed audio clips of Paul Gascoigne and Peter Beardsley attempting his rap, and said he battled five other players for the right to perform the rap on the song.

When ‘World In Motion’ was first released, NME asked Barnes how excited he was to be collaborating on a football song, to which he responded: “If I thought it was going to be the same as the usual crap, why bother? But this is alright.”

World Cup fever is ramping up, with the tournament beginning next Thursday (June 11) and England’s campaign starting against Croatia on June 17.

Baddiel, Skinner & Lightning Seeds have announced a 30th anniversary re-release of their own England anthem ‘Three Lions’, while Belle & Sebastian have penned a buoyant song for Scotland’s campaign, ‘It Only Takes One Lion’, with Stuart Murdoch telling NME, “you have to understand, it’s been 30 years since Scotland qualified so I think everybody and their dog has written a song for the team”.

Susan Boyle and Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos have teamed up for the Irn Bru World Cup ad, while an official FIFA World Cup soundtrack album has been announced, featuring The Rolling Stones, Shakira and Stormzy.

Reflecting on the gig last night, meanwhile, Hook wrote on Instagram that it was a “truly memorably show”, and thanked Rowetta and Buzzcocks for their appearances too.

Hook himself was in attendance at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester for the Sex Pistols’ historic show in 1976, and he famously went out and bought his first bass the following day, forming the band Warsaw, who went on to be known as Joy Division.

The show is credited with being a big bang event in British punk music and is also seen as kickstarting the Manchester music scene, with others in attendance including Hook’s future bandmate Bernard Sumner, as well as Morrissey, Mark E. Smith, Tony Wilson and John Cooper Clarke.

The Cure kicked off their 2026 tour — thier first in three years — at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound on Friday night. The severe weather that canceled many sets on Thursday, including Massive Attack’s, was gone and the the crowd was ready to party, gloomy-style, and The Cure brought the hits for their first performance since the special London shows for the release of 2024’s Songs of a Lost World.

The two-and-a-half-hour performance opened with “Alone” from Songs of a Lost World and the main set closed with “Endsong,” much like they had done for their 2022/2023 tour. In between it was a parade of classics, including “Pictures of You,” “High,” Lovesong,” “Fascination Street,” “In Between Days,” “Just Like Heaven,” “Push,” “A Forest,” and more.

The did dust a few songs off for Primavera including “Mint Car” which got its first play in 10 years, “alt.end,” which hadn’t been performed since 2018 and “2 Late” and “Wrong Number” which hadn’t been played since 2019.

The nine-song encore was all singles: with Lullaby,” “Hot Hot Hot!!!,” “Wrong Number,” “Let’s Go To Bed,” “The Lovecats,” “Friday I’m in Love,” “Close to Me,” Why Can’t I Be You?” and finally “Boys Don’t Cry” which had the whole of the Parc del Fòrum singing the guitar hook.

The whole set was also streamed live on Amazon Prime Video.

Check out The Cure’s Primavera setlist, and a few fan pics and videos from the show below.

Next stop on The Cure’s tour is Porto’s North Festival on June 7. All dates are listed below.

seriously, whats with names like "bassquaker" or "glitchflux"? its like they just smashed two vaguely tech-sounding words together and called it a day. dont get me wrong, some are cool, but others just scream "i used a generator." feels like no one even tries to check if it sounds dumb out loud ive seen a few threads lately about branding for new djs and this keeps coming up. like, if youre trying to stand out, at least pick something that doesnt sound like it belongs on a bad startup logo. or am i the only one who cringes at this stuff? also, quick tip for anyone picking a name: say it in a sentence. "youre listening to dj bassquaker" should not make you laugh.

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder in Hacks

Hacks has come to an end with the finale of season five, but do Deborah and Ava reunite? Find out below.

The comedy-drama has been a critical and commercial success for HBO Max since it launched in 2021 and its fifth and final season concluded on May 28, bringing it to a final close.

It starred Jean Smart as Deborah Vance, a stand-up comedian, and Hannah Einbinder as Ava Daniels, her comedy writer, as they navigate the evolving dynamics of their professional partnership and personal lives within the contemporary comedy industry.

It was created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky and it co-starred the latter two in supporting roles, as well as the likes of Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Rose Abdoo and Mark Indelicato.

All five seasons of the show have been highly acclaimed, all scoring 98 per cent or higher on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has won five Golden Globes and nine Emmys.

Its fourth season landed in NME’s list of the best television shows of 2025, which noted: “Still the most scalpel-sharp comedy around with an undertow of pathos, highlights included Deborah running afoul of HR when offering her writers’ room drugs on a Las Vegas work retreat, the introduction of Julianne Nicolson’s cocaine-boofing TikTok star ‘Dance Mom’, and a sensational denouement that acts as a clever series redux.”

The ending of Hacks season five explained: do Deborah and Ava reunite?

Jean Smart’s Deborah has spent the fifth and final season frozen with fears of mortality and irrelevance, after false reports of her death.

At the start of the final episode, Ava is directing the pilot of the reboot of Deborah’s sitcom Who’s Making Dinner?, while Deborah reveals that her cancer has returned. Rather than undergo treatment, she decides to travel to Zurich for assisted suicide after one final holiday in Paris. Ava is devastated by this and begs her to reconsider, but Deborah carries on determined.

At a Paris train station, Ava prepares to board with Deborah, having accepted her decision. They begin to joke together about death and their connection makes Deborah realise that she still enjoys writing comedy material, and sparks her passion for performing live.

Instead of boarding the train, Deborah askes Ava to help her write one last stand-up special and Ava immediately agrees.

As the show climaxes, Deborah realises that what she truly values is not her legacy or her mortality, but the act of creation. She returns to Las Vegas and begins cancer treatment and resumes writing with Ava.

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

NIA ARCHIVES – “VERTICAL”

Nia Archives released new album Emotional Junglist in July and here’s another preview of that. She says, “There’s this one synth that kind of beeps, and it just makes you feel a bit dissociative. That’s what I enjoy about production – how can you say something without the lyrics? I wanted it to feel like December in London.”

PROTEST THE HERO – “MOUTHPIECE”

Canadian progressive post-hardcore band Protest the Hero release a new album, Within, on July 17. About new single “Mouthpiece,” vocalist Rody Walker says, “On the record focused on the micro, ‘Mouthpiece’ is the only song from a macro perspective. This is not without reason. It is about the controlling powers that have convinced us that everything needs to be divided into binaries despite the fact that very few things truly exist within them. It describes a world of brilliant colour reduced to black and white by charlatans like podcasters and corporate media. It suggests the only true binary we should pay attention to is the very wealthy and everyone else.”

MADONNA – “LOVE SENSATION”

Madonna debuted “Love Senation” at her surprise Times Square performance on Thursday, and now here’s the studio version. New album Confessions II is out July 3.

FUMING MOUTH – “A BLAZE OF NIHILISM”

Fuming Mouth release their new album The Ringing Bell on July 17 via Triple B, and they’ve shared the first single, which is also their first music with their new drummer Jay Weinberg, formerly of Slipknot.

BRUTALISMUS 3000 – “GORE LOUVRE”

German duo Brutalismus 3000 have shared a second single from their upcoming album Harmony. “Gore Louvre” is another punishing banger and comes with a creepy/cool video.

PATRICK WOLF – “THE LAUGHING DOVE”

As he begins his US tour, and following last week’s “The Beast,” Patrick Wolf has shared “The Laughing Dove.” He says it’s “a song I wrote in the desert this February standing on a distance enough back from the world to gather a perspective on its spin and return with this message from the dove – visiting me the morning a sandstorm was making its way in – the video, compiled in part with my footage from my yearly journeys is yours to disappear into too.”

FLOATING POINTS – “HER GIFT”

Floating Points’ new album, Mere Mortals, is a bit of a departure for the dance music producer — an orchestral score for “a futuristic retelling of the myth of Pandora” that will be out August 28 via esteemed classical label Deutsche Grammophon.

FLO – “DON’T BREAK HER HEART”

FLO’s sophomore LP is out next month, and the new single is “Don’t Break Her Heart,” which trio says is their “favourite sisterhood anthem! It really encapsulates our love for each other and the lengths we are willing to go to protect the hearts of our sisters.”

SHE’S GREEN – “CLOSE YOUR EYES”

Like Cocteau Twins? Close your eyes and you might think this song by she’s green was them. New EP Swallowtail is out July 10.

BIG FREEDIA & SOPHIE – “GO DOWN”

Big Freedia has shared another track from her EP with the late SOPHIE, the bold “Go Down.”

TAYLOR SWIFT – “I KNEW IT, I KNEW YOU”

“Writing this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time,” Taylor Swift says of her new song, which was written for Pixar’s Toy Story 5. “Creating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once. And being a Toy Story kid from the age of 5 til now… is an adventure I plan to be on, to infinity and beyond. Thank you to the brilliant Andrew Stanton for imagining me for this, all those years ago when you wrote this newest film. Thank you to the incomparable Randy Newman for the gorgeous sonic tapestry of songs and scores you’ve meticulously woven over the years. You created the Toy Story musical world, and we are lucky to get to live in it.”

TINASHE – “TOO EASY”

Tinashe is back with her first new music in two years. Kimj and Zack Sekoff produced the song that got its live debut at Coachella.

THE OFFSPRING & ELECTRIC CALLBOY – “LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL”

The Offspring and Electric Callboy teamed up for a new single, “Let the Good Times Roll,” from Electric Callboy’s newa lbum TANZNEID. “”When Electric Callboy sent us the track, it immediately put a grin on our faces,” Dexter Holland says. “It’s energetic, unpredictable and doesn’t take itself too seriously — exactly the kind of spirit we’ve always loved about punk and rock music.”

LAURA MARLING – LAURA SINGS RAFFI

“Laura Sings Raffi marks a logical next step for me,” Laura Marling says, “but it’s not only a desire for tolerable children’s music that landed me here. Having discovered Canadian songwriter and children’s entertainer, Raffi, while living in North America, I developed a love for his sincere, dead pan renditions of both his original songs for the very young and those plucked from the canon – all before I even had children of my own. These covers, though not all Raffi originals, are delivered in homage to his style and ethos, that being not only a respect for children and his expert attendance to what entertains them, but also to his wider audience – the parents whom he has blissfully attended also.”

IBEYI – “OFFERINGS”

Ibeyi have given us another taste of their new album Offering with the whispery, mystical title track.

CMAT – “WHEN A GOOD MAN CRIES”

Just days after Olivia Rodrigo covered CMAT’s “When A Good Man Cries,” CMAT herself has released video of the song, which was on last year’s great EURO-COUNTRY.

OSEES – ‘OFF COURSE’

We went back to an older method of writing for this one,” OSEES frontman John Dwyer says of the band’s new album that dropped out of nowhere today. “We jammed and jammed and jammed.

STEVE LACY – “THE FEELING”

Steve Lacy announced his third album, Oh yeah?, and gave us a preview with “The Feeling,” which you can read more about here.

TIERRA WHACK – “WAX PAPER”

It’s the first single from WHACK’S MUSEUM and of course it’s got an amazing video.

Grohl said earlier this year that she didn’t like male musicians her age.

“I don’t like male musicians my age – I don’t care,” she said. “They have attitude problems. They’ve been saying this about us for so fucking long – it’s time that they sit down, be quiet and play their music.

“The best advice I’ve been given is that it’s OK to say no or that you don’t want to do something,” she continued. “For a lot of women, it took them a really long time to accept and implement that into their lives. It’s inspiring to be around the kinds of people who don’t give a fuck and will say whatever they feel.”

Meanwhile, father Dave Grohl revealed several months ago that he had “no idea” Violet had signed a record deal until she told him at dinner.

Culture Club Kissing to Be Clever

43 years after its original release, the video for Culture Club’s piano ballad “Victims” has arrived on YouTube. The video resurfaces ahead of the June 9th theatrical release of Boy George & Culture Club, a new documentary film from director Alison Ellwood.

“Victims” was released as the second single off the group’s now-signature record Colour By Numbers. It had the daunting task of following the massive success of “Karma Chameleon,” and diverged stylistically from “Karma’s” influences. “Victims” was only issued in five countries, including the group’s native UK, where it peaked at number three on the UK singles chart.

In the video, Boy George is seen in one of his signature top hats and ribbons in his hair. He sings to the camera as he moves through a changing set, featuring an orchestra, a choir, and a harpist.

Boy George & Culture Club premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival. This is the latest musical feature from Alison Ellwood, having previously directed The Go-Go’s, Laurel Canyon, and Cyndi Lauper: Let the Canary Sing. “I was most surprised by how forthcoming George, Jon [Moss], Mikey [Craig], and Roy [Hay] were in telling their story,” Ellwood told Rolling Stone. “Their powerful testimony takes us on a very personal and immersive journey, with each member experiencing the trials and tribulations of fame and success. I think the audience will be surprised by the depth and sophistication of their catalogue, even beyond the big hits that we all associate with the band.”

The group’s impact continues to be felt. Just recently, Boy George was presented a lifetime achievement award at the British LGBT Awards. He additionally took home the award for music artist of the year. He shared his feelings with the BBC following the event: “I feel so emotional, I was sitting there with my best friends… and I can’t even tell you how beautiful it was.”
