Slick Rick The Art Of Storytelling album cover

Slick Rick released The Art Of Storytelling on May 25, 1999, just over a decade after his debut album and signature hit “La-Di-Da-Di” made him a hip-hop immortal. The album’s title would be pretentious for anyone who hadn’t achieved his iconic status, but at this point, The Ruler had earned it. Vocally and lyrically, he was in a lane all his own. No one looked like him, no one sounded like him, and no one told a tall tale like him.

The folk hero

Slick Rick is a folk hero. He’s a legend, yes, but also a folk hero. He came up during the golden age of hip-hop but unlike all the guys who stuck around – Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Ghostface Killah – Rick kind of disappeared for a while. He was 34, married with children, and had four classic albums to his name. In 1999, there wasn’t exactly a precedent for rappers building longevity through near-annual releases and a handful of guest appearances between each one. Being his final album, however, The Art Of Storytelling, was built to last. It also became his highest-charting album, reaching No.8 on the Billboard 200 and No.1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

Rick’s songs are both deeply (sometimes absurdly) personal, but they retain their broader relevancy thanks to his charm and, if nothing else, honesty. “Trapped In Me” and “I Run This” are masterclasses in braggadocio through subtle, preternatural understanding of the fundamentals, musical and otherwise.

Big Boi, Nas, Raekwon, and Snoop Dogg all come through for guest verses – the former shining on the album’s only single, “Street Talkin’.” The roster didn’t just represent the changing of the guard; it was a testament to how much respect Rick garnered – and would go on to maintain. These featured guests would stick around for 20 years, all four becoming (to varying degrees) some of the most recognizable and influential elder statesmen in hip-hop. The same goes for Rev Run and Q-Tip, who also feature.

The DNA of Storytelling

It doesn’t take an expert to find The Art Of Storytelling’s DNA in much of the hip-hop that followed. “Frozen” sounds like it’s out of the Kanye vault, while “I Own America” is a perfectly suitable boom-bap outing that feels prototypical of so many Neptunes songs that would follow. The production on “Impress The Kid” and “Why, Why, Why,” meanwhile, is as multi-layered as nearly anything going on today.

Listen to The Art Of Storytelling right now.

Even though this was his last album, Rick’s influence was so pervasive it’s as if he’d kept churning out albums into the new millennium. Among the following generation’s most prolific artists – Lil Wayne, Kanye, Nicki Minaj, Danny Brown, J Cole – Rick is referenced through lyrics, sampling, and as a legend in his own right.

The legacy

Rick is so smooth on The Art Of Storytelling that even when the verses are sparse, it’s nearly impossible to discern from the more intricate bars. That’s what the art of storytelling is: doing the tricks so well that no one notices. And despite a smaller body of work than many, Rick remains one of the most sampled, interpolated, and quoted rappers of all time. He’s been referenced so often it’s impossible to tell where the tribute ends and the inadvertent homage begins.

Like the Brothers Grimm, Rick is a classic storyteller in every sense of the word.

The Art Of Storytelling can be bought here.

like seriously it’s 2026 and i swear every time i see someone check their phone for teh time i just... cant help but feel a little sad. analog watches are so much cooler theyre functional *and* they look good. plus you dont have to deal with notifications or whatever popping up when all you wanna know is whether its lunch yet. i get it, phones are convenient but cmon, a watch is like the one accessory that doesnt scream “im trying too hard” you know? i dont even wear fancy ones, just a simple analog with a clean face. feels like people forgot how satisfying it is to glance at your wrist instead of digging out a slab of glass. idk maybe im being old-fashioned but...

like seriously, it feels like half the genre is just 'driving down a long road' or 'left on the highway to nowhere' or whatever. think about it — life is a highway, born to be wild, take it easy even stuff like thunder road or free bird kinda fits if you squint. and dont get me started on springsteen. i get that its a good metaphor for freedom or escape but its so overdone at this point. like cant we get some variety? what about trains or boats or bikes even? idk man it just feels lazy after a while, like writers ran out of other ways to say 'im going somewhere.'

also side note: anyone else think the 'open road' trope is way more compelling in country music? at least there its tied to actual stories half the time instead of just abstract vibes anyway rant over, what do yall think?

you know that vibe when youre shuffling through racks of old sweaters and chipped mugs and everything smells faintly of wood polish and mothballs? theres something about that feeling — nostalgic but not too heavy, kinda comforting but also like youre in this weird limbo where time doesnt matter. i feel like theres a whole genre of songs like that but i cant quite pin it down. maybe something acoustic? or with light synth that doesnt overpower? idk man, it just feels like the kind of music youd hear faintly over speakers while you debate whether to buy a ceramic frog or not. examples welcome. lowkey also if youve got a thrift store story, drop it, my last find was a cookbook from 1973 with recipes for "space-age jello salads" so clearly im doing something right.

lowkey okay but like why do so many ai demos show it writing resumes or scheduling meetings?? who is out here thinking "wow my life is incomplete without ai doing this for me" LMAO. like yeah sure it could save some time but is that really the pinnacle of what this tech can do? feels like theyre trying to sell us on stuff we dont even want. also why is it always the same examples, cant they think of something slightly more interesting. like, idk maybe im just cynical but it all feels so... uninspired. also whats with the overly polished mockups where everything works perfectly and no one ever has tech issues? we all know real life is way messier than that. cant they show something vaguely realistic for once? nope, hard pass on these demos til they get more creative.

like yeah sure it’s cool you can turn off your lights with your phone but then the app glitches or the wifi goes out and suddenly you’re standing in the dark yelling at a bulb like it’s gonna listen... or the thermostat decides it knows better than you what temperature you want and ignores your settings entirely. plus half the time they stop working after two updates and youre stuck with a $200 paperweight. i get wanting convenience but at what cost honestly. seems like we traded simple switches for more headaches dont even get me started on the privacy concerns 🤦

People can do all manner of stuff when they are really angry. It could be anything, but my advice is that no matter what anyone is doing, it is necessary that they don't make moves that they would regret later.

For you, how do you get to handle being really angry?

like i get wanting to be creative or quirky but why is it always stuff like ‘golden hour vibes’ or ‘rainy day chill’ when half the songs are just midtempo synthwave or whatever cant we just call it what it is. also why are there so many sunset themed playlists that have zero sunset-appropriate songs. im pretty sure ‘bittersweet symphony’ was not written about watching the sun go down. rant over.

How close are you to your siblings? Are you the type who is always reaching out to them at all times? How have you been handling certain situations that relate to them and the challenges that they face?

like you know the one — starts all minor and moody then BAM big major lift halfway through. dont get me wrong, its effective as hell and i still fall for it sometimes, but its so overdone it feels like every newbie producer learned it on day 1 and never let go i get wanting to make people feel something but its like... hey maybe try a different trick once in a while? theres a whole keyboard out there honestly im not saying ban it or anything (its still a banger when done right) but it kinda feels like the musical equivalent of using paprika on everything because you heard its a spice. anyway rant over, whats your most overplayed edm trope?
