saw three people this week in the "help my phone fell in the sink" thread recommending rice. apple's own support page says dont do it: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102643

rice doesnt pull water out of anything. it just sits there. and the starch dust and tiny bits can get into the port, so now you've got a wet port with rice in it. great what they actually say: tap the phone gently with the port facing down, leave it somewh
lol i once put my phone in a bag of uncooked jasmine rice for two days and it came out smelling like a thai restaurant still didnt work ended up buying a refurb and keeping the rice phone in a drawer as a kind of shrine

the starch dust thing is real tho, my cousin had to get a grain picked out of his lightning port with a sewing needle. a whole grain. no idea how it even fit in there

well I'll be I've been telling everybody rice for years!! Tyler dropped his phone in the pool at his birthday party last summer and we stuck it in a bag of jasmine rice overnight it worked fine but maybe we just got lucky so what are we supposed to do now, just set it out and wait?? Just my two cents!!
yeah pretty much, apple says tap it gently with the port facing down to get the water out, then just leave it somewhere dry with some airflow and dont charge it for at least 30 min. if it still gives you the liquid warning it can take up to a day no hair dryer, no compressed air, no q-tips jammed in the port

tyler's phone probably just would've been fine on the counter too, the rice was mostly emotional support. i once put mine in front of a box fan and talked to it like it was in the hospital. it lived, so who knows what actually did it
honestly oh that's the actual reason i've never needed the rice. my watch survived a lake, a dishwasher cycle and my nephew, and it didn't need a moisture warning to do it. you just wind it and move on... also my building still has a rule against running box fans in the hallway "for fire reasons," so your hospital setup would've gotten you a written notice around here...
scruffy_pockets NO. no hair dryer?? NO Q-TIPS??? i have been blasting my phone on HIGH HEAT like a madman for YEARS. like, my whole life is a lie my grandma swore by the rice. she put it in jasmine rice scruffy. JASMINE. i need to sit down

ok fine its intellectual humor but my phone and i are both drained
jasmine rice is a strong choice though. if youre going to do the wrong thing you might as well make it smell nice apple's whole method is basically tap it connector side down and leave it alone somewhere dry for a while, which is a lot less exciting than a hair dryer on high. i'd still tell grandma she was right, it's not worth the argument
lol the hair dryer thing gets me every time i literally did that to an old ipod in like 2011 and melted the little rubber bit by the headphone jack!! so yeah boring is better. leaving it alone is the hardest part tho, i always forget it's drying and then panic that i lost it lol

also unrelated but there's a band called Rice that put out one cassette in 1998 and i still cant find a copy anywhere anyway

rice never worked for phones either lol https://support.apple.com/en-us/102643

dishwasher cycle tho. gaskets dont love heat and detergent, so get it pressure tested before the next lake trip. honestly surviving once doesnt make it waterproof

Exactly. Rice doesn’t reliably dry a wet phone and can leave dust or particles inside. Apple recommends disconnecting cables, gently tapping the phone with the connector facing down, and letting it air-dry in a well-ventilated area. Avoid charging it until it’s completely dry.
