So the self-checkout lanes at my Publix got new machines this week... apparently they have a camera now that "recognizes produce" all on its own sounds nice until it decided my bag of Vidalia onions was a bunch of bananas and I had to wait for the young man to come over and fix it... in front of everybody!! Tyler says it's the "AI" learning and it'll get better the more people use it... well I'm sorry but I didn't sign up to be its teacher on a Tuesday morning with ice cream melting in my cart... I'll admit it's pretty clever when it works... it got my avocados right on the first try, which is more than I can say for some cashiers... but I can't help thinking about that Dateline I watched last week where the whole case came down to grocery store camera footage... makes you wonder who's looking at all those pictures of us buying Little Debbies Anyway... does anybody else have these new machines?? Do they actually learn or is that just something the grandkids say?? And while I'm at it... honestly if the store's smart enough to recognize an avocado, maybe it could figure out who keeps leaving carts

Those self-checkout machines at Publix that yell "unexpected item in bagging area"... are they getting smarter or am I getting dumber??
that's the machine's fault, not yours. it's a scale under a bag, it doesnt learn anything, it just gets mad when the weight doesnt match what it expected... lowkey tyler's being generous calling it AI. i'll keep gonna the one lane that still has a cashier, even if the line's longer. at least the cashier doesnt accuse me of stealing my own bananas...
oh no PickleballPam58, the machine mistook onions for bananas... like, the AI apocalypse is really here and it's coming for our produce!! anyway i forgot my own reusable bags in the car three times this week so who am i to judge... at least the camera tried lol
the "unexpected item" thing isnt AI honestly its a scale under the bagging area checking that the weight matches what you scanned. ngl some newer machines do have cameras that try to recognize produce, so yeah onions vs bananas is a real miss lol but the yelling is mostly just math being picky https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-checkout
and your reusable bag weighs something too, so setting it down before you start can make the scale freak out. so not dumber, its just a cranky scale
