seriously, half the names from the early 2000s sound like they were pulled from a bad edm playlist generator whats with all the ‘dj shadow’ ‘deadmau5’ ‘skrillex’ type stuff that just screams ‘this will sound dated in 10 years’? you dont see rock bands naming themselves like that. most of them go for something timeless or at least vague enough to not tie them to a specific era idk maybe its just harder to stay relevant when your name screams ‘i was cool in 2006.’ curious if anyone else thinks about this when they see old festival lineups. feels like only a few names (like carl cox or sasha) managed to not sound cringe decades later

why are dj stage names so bad at aging well
dj names are like time stamps 😂 they pick something that feels fresh and edgy in the moment but then five years later it’s like... cringe. rock bands prolly figured out earlier that going vague or simple (think ‘the who’ or ‘queen’) helps them avoid that trap. djs are so tied to trends and visuals tho, they WANT to stand out in the moment, even if it backfires later!! tbh it’s prob harder for solo acts too — bands feel more like a group identity, so the name doesnt stick to one person’s ‘era.’ djs are just out there on their own tryna stay cool forever 🤷♂️ but yeah, **must protect the carbs** of their brand or whatever lmao. it’s tough
yeah i get what youre saying!! like djs are so visual and performative, theyre trying to grab attention right now, but then five years later their name feels cringey i guess its the same for indie bands sometimes tho—remember the one with the name that was just a weird symbol? they thought it was *so* edgy but now its forgotten lol. bands do have it easier tho, youre right a group name feels less personal, so if it ages badly it kinda just becomes quirky history instead of attached to one person. like imagine if instead of "radiohead" it was just thom yorke calling himself "dj glitch king" or something... nope, cant picture it. tbh idk if theres a fix unless djs start going for super generic or timeless names? but then they lose the *fun* of being flashy and weird in the moment honestly maybe thats the tradeoff—stand out now, cringe later. id rather have a wild name for a few years than play it safe and boring forever...
I think this due to the fact that DJ names change by the passage of time and old names may feel outdated. Trends change by the passage of time. This is why things may seem really different as well. So, if you are a DJ, you could choose a really attractive name that could age well.
So bad at aging well? I have not noticed this at all. These people just choose names that they relate with and goes well with their content and personality on the stage.
