why do people still use digital clocks on their nightstands

like seriously, you wake up in teh middle of the night and its flashing 3:17 am in bright blue leds, how is that supposed to help anyone sleep? dont even get me started on the ones with the colon blinking every second its 2026, we have dimmable everything else, why not nightstand clocks? analog all the way, no light pollution, no distractions, just a quiet little hand ticking away... its not that hard to glance over and see roughly what time it is without being assaulted by numbers. i get that some people need alarms but theres gotta be a better way than this. like, maybe im just biased because i like the simplicity of a good watch but cmon, its not like we need a timer for how long weve been lying awake stressing about tomorrows meetings...
yeah but like sometimes you just wanna know **exactly** how much sleep you’re losing when you wake up at 3 am, yknow?? ive tried analog and idk man, im too scatterbrained to guess if it’s 3:12 or 3:17 without a bright neon reminder screaming at me... plus those ticking hands? distract me more than glowing numbers tbqh. honestly tho i did see this one indie band rant about light pollution and now im low-key considering a moon phase clock instead... anyway, sorry for derailing, carry on!
i had a digital clock once and the numbers were SO bright it lit up the whole room like i was in a spaceship or something. ditched it for an analog one but the ticking? yeah nope, hard pass. now im team **no clock at all**, just check my phone if i need the time. cleaner vibe though moon phase clocks sound kinda cool, like low-stakes astrology for your nightstand.
I think people like to use digital clocks because they are far much easier to look and they are capable of showing the exact time. They also look much better than analog clocks.
digital clocks are just practical — youre half asleep, you dont want to squint at hands or guess the time, you want the exact number. moon phase clocks are neat but theyre not gonna tell you if you overslept.
i get the practicality but analog clocks are way cooler. like sure, i might have to squint a little but its not that hard and they give off this calm vibe. digital ones feel too sterile, like im in a hospital or something. plus theres something satisfying about seeing the hands move, even if you dont notice it. idk man, its just more human
yeah practicality is kinda the point. squinting at analog clocks when you're groggy isnt exactly fun digital ones just give you the time, no guessing ngl also, isnt the 'calm vibe' thing subjective? some people find the glow of a digital clock soothing, like it’s consistent and clear. moon phase clocks are cool but they’re more decor than function. also, hands moving is satisfying? okay, but you’re asleep most of the time it’s on your nightstand honestly not sure how much you’re actually appreciating that.
idk man, i think it’s just habit at this point people grew up with digital clocks so they stick with what they know. plus, some probably like that they can see the exact time instantly without squinting at analog hands in the dark. but yeah, the light thing is annoying... if you’re trying to sleep, why would you want a tiny screen shouting "it’s 2:43 and you’re still awake" at you? analog clocks are better for that 'set it and forget it' vibe no flashy numbers, no constant reminders of how little sleep you’re getting just a calm, steady tick although, i guess if you’re someone who needs to check the time a lot, digital might win out. still, theres something kinda nice about not being able to immediately tell its 4:52 and feel bad about it. anyway, moon phase clocks are neat but yeah, more for show honestly, if you’re that into moon phases, just look out the window...
**datawrangler92** YOURE TELLING ME YOU’D TRADE THE SOOTHING GLOW OF A MOON PHASE CLOCK FOR A HARSH RED NUMBER SCREAMING “IT’S 3:17 AM”?!? ngl oVERSLEEPING IS A MOOD, NOT A CRISIS. DIGITAL CLOCKS ARE PRACTICAL IF YOU WANT YOUR ROOM TO FEEL LIKE A DENTAL OFFICE. NEITHER NEAT NOR FUNCTIONAL, SIR.
