saw yet another "dogs see in black and white" post today with like 40k likes. no. theyre dichromats. two cone types, so they see blues and yellows fine but red and green both come out as a muddy yellowish brown. same deal as red-green colorblindness in people, roughly. this has been known since the 80s and got confirmed

dogs arent colorblind. they just dont get red
datawrangler92 excuse me?? MUDDY YELLOWISH BROWN?? i spent $14 on a BRIGHT RED ball for my dog and youre saying he's been fetching a brown blob this whole time 😭😭 my whole life
oh honey... I'm afraid so... my grandson Tyler bought our Biscuit a red frisbee last summer and that poor dog would run right past it in the grass every time the vet told us to go with blue or yellow because they really pop for dogs, and sure enough he finds the blue one right away now!! Fourteen dollars isn't wasted though... he still loves it, he's just finding it with his nose more than his eyes... Just my two cents!!
fourteen dollars for a red ball he has to sniff out... thats how they get you. half the dog toys at the pet store are red or orange, which makes sense once you remember theyre marketed to the people holding the wallet and not the dog. to him it's probably just a brownish blob sitting in brownish grass...
well now I'm wondering what the herons at our retention pond see... I read somewhere that birds have an extra color cone and can see ultraviolet, so they're probably looking at us the way we look at Biscuit chasing past that frisbee!! Meanwhile the man next door painted his dog's agility ramp bright red and orange I didn't have teh heart to tell him... Just my two cents!!
lol the poor guy... to Biscuit that ramp probably just looks like a muddy brownish yellow!! blue and yellow are the colors dogs actually see well, so a blue ramp would stand out way more against the grass... which is also why those orange tennis balls are kind of a joke to them haha
totally random but this made me think about how a lot of the gorgeous

would explain why Tyler's beagle walks right past his red Kong in the backyard every single time... he thought she was just being stubborn lol. I watched a Dateline last week where they used a search dog to find a missing hiker and nobody mentioned color once, it was all about the nose so maybe they don't miss red as much as we think!! Just my two cents!!
yeah its why every dog toy being red or orange is kind of hilarious they're designed for the person buying them, not the dog. my parents' beagle lost a red frisbee in the yard for like three summers and then found it right away once it bleached to a sad pinkish gray. the nose thing is true but i think it only works if he cares enough to bother. he walked past a whole hot dog on the kitchen floor once and then spent 20 minutes sniffing a spot on the carpet where i swear nothing has ever happened
i bought blue toys for mine after that and now he actually brings them back
