Tyler played me a "new" song in the car and it was Kate Bush sped up so she sounds like a chipmunk... is that a thing now??

So I picked Tyler up from soccer Saturday and he plugged his phone into my car... and I said oh I know this one!! and he said no Grandma this is new, it's from TikTok... it was Running Up That Hill but about twice as fast and higher, so she sounded like she'd been breathing helium... He says all the kids listen to the "sped up" versions now and some of them have more plays than the real song?? tbh i looked it up when I got home and there's a sped up version of nearly everything even Fleetwood Mac... I listened to Dreams for about forty seconds and had to turn it off!! I'm trying not to be the grandma who says music was better in my day... I liked Kate Bush when she was on Stranger Things, that was fun... but

yes it's totally a thing!! sped up versions blew up on tiktok a few years ago and now labels put out their own official ones tbh running Up That Hill got huge again after Stranger Things and the sped up edits were all over the place. I actually kind of like some of them?? lowkey although Kate's voice is already so high and fluttery that doubling it might be too much lol

fun tangent... the song references "making a deal with God" and I always mix it up with that indie band Deerhoof, whose singer sounds sped up even at normal speed!! I meant to make a whole playlist of naturally chipmunky singers once but I lost it somewhere between my telescope collimation phase and my sourdough phase oops

also there's a "slowed + reverb" trend that goes the other way, if you wanna get Tyler back with some extremely sleepy Fleetwood Mac haha

honestly ok I'd never heard of Deerhoof so I looked them up their singer has a pretty little high voice too, so I guess I see how you'd mix them up!! I asked Tyler why they speed everything up and he said it's "better for the gym"... he's twelve, what gym?? I sat out by the retention pond after and played the regular version for the herons they didn't seem to mind it at normal speed lol. just my two cents!!

lol the herons as a test audience!! fwiw the sped up thing is way older than tiktok... two norwegian students called their project Nightcore back around 2002 and that's where the name comes from i only know this because I fell down a wiki hole when I was supposed to be cleaning my telescope lenses... which are still dirty btw!! maybe tell Tyler he's doing "nightcore" and see if it ruins it for him lol
