my dog howls every single time i play this one obscure shoegaze album... only that one!!

ngl ok so this has been going on for like two weeks and i finally have to ask if anyone else's pet does this. my beagle mix Pickles couldn't care less about pretty much any music i play. He sleeps through everything! But the second i put on this tiny indie shoegaze record i bought at a merch table (and of course i forgot the band's name, it's somewhere in my stack of vinyl...), he sits up and full-on howls at the speakers. Head tilted back and everything!! i tried other shoegaze to see if it's the genre and nope. He doesn't react to anything else. It's just this one album... There's a high droning guitar part on track 2 so maybe that's it?? idk

kind of a tangent but Pickles is named after the Pickles who is my favorite old astronomy podcast host's cat, not the food. Nobody believes me lol

also i was supposed to film it for my sister and i keep forgetting to hit record. Three attempts so far!! Too many hobbies, not enough brain cells... so does your pet have one random song or sound that sets them off?? I need to know Pickles isn't the only weirdo here!

probably some high pitched drone or feedback frequency buried in the mix that you cant really hear but he definitely can small merch table pressings usually get mastered pretty cheap too, so who knows what ended up in there... my neighbor's beagle does the same thing to the 6pm civic center siren, which the city "tested" every day for three months straight 🤦

eh, i doubt its hidden ultrasonic stuff. cheap masters usually roll off the high end, they dont add anything up there. honestly and if he's hearing it off a CD or stream, theres basically nothing above 22khz anyway

Tyler thinks it's the funniest thing he's ever seen, he tried playing it off his phone at Thanksgiving just to set him off which album is it though?? I'm curious now if it's one of those really droney ones... just my two cents!!

lol okay so i finally dug through the vinyl pile and of course its the one record with no name on the spine... the sleeve just has a blurry photo of what i'm pretty sure is the Pleiades?? Fun fact, that cluster is also called the Seven Sisters but most people only see six with the naked eye, and nobody totally agrees on why!! like, anyway yes it's super droney, one long wall of guitar feedback with barely any vocals... Pickles starts howling about 40 seconds in, every time Your Dateline dog is amazing though, Tyler setting him off at Thanksgiving is incredible!!

omg a beagle with a favorite true crime show is the best thing ive heard all week!! did Tyler's playing it off thing actually work or did the dog know it wasnt the real deal... my cat only shows up for the can opener, which is a lot less classy. oh and fun fact, beagles were basically bred to howl (its called baying) so teh poor guy is probably just doing his job lol

wait the Tyler phone thing is actually a decent test. ngl phone speakers barely put out anything below like 200hz, so if the dog still lost it off a phone you can rule out the low end and its something in the mids.

lol the microwave beep thing tracks tho tbh its a steady pure tone and those get pets going way more than random noise. same reason dogs howl at sirens, its a long held note that sorta sounds like another howl. OP does it happen on every track or just certain ones? if its only the droney feedback-heavy songs id bet thats it. sho

lol yeah the drone theory makes sense, i kinda got stuck on frequencies last time totally forgot to ask OP which album it is though!! if it's something like Swirlies or Lilys my money's on a specific track with a long held feedback note. also fun fact, sirens and wolf howls both slide around in pitch, so a song with lots of whammy bar warble could hit the same spot!! ok i need to stop, i have three telescopes and a half-built synth waiting for me and i still haven't finished any of them

lol three telescopes and a half built synth... my late husband had a garage full of those kinds of projects and I'm still finding pieces of a ham radio kit in the shed!! the warble thing does make sense though... the herons at our retention pond make this long creaky squawk at dusk and the Johnsons' lab two doors down starts going every time, so maybe it really is about the pitch sliding around still waiting to hear which album it is!!

lol oh honey the Johnsons didnt DO anything... I just got distracted mid sentence because Tyler called to ask if I could Venmo him gas money!! their lab doesnt howl at the herons exactly he just sits by the fence and does this low little moan every time they squawk, and Linda Johnson swears he's "singing along"... she also leaves her cart in the middle of the Publix parking lot every week so I take what she says with a grain of salt... anyway the original poster still hasnt told us the album and I've been sitting here waiting longer than I wait for court 3 when the same four people "just finish one more game"!! ohh thats so interesting my neighbor's beagle Rufus goes absolutely bananas every time the ambulance goes by on Clearwater Rd, so that makes total sense!! funny thing is the herons at the pond dont even flinch at sirens... I guess they've heard it all lol. just my two cents!!
