ok settle this spent 6 hrs lubing 90 switches last weekend and my hands still smell like krytox. my buddy says tape mod alone gets you 80% of the thock for 5 min of work. i say hes wrong but i cant prove it vote and tell me in the comments what your best mod for the effort is. bonus points if you post a sound test https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=keyboard+tape+mod+sound+test

Which switch mod is actually worth the effort?
ok since nobody's posted yet, my vote's stabs. clip, lube, holee mod. maybe 30 min and the rattle on the spacebar is just gone. tape cant touch rattle at all. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=holee+mod+stabilizer
also "80% of the thock" is a made up number lol. tape

oh good grief the link got cut off... i just spent ten minutes trying to figure out what a holee mod was 😂 my grandson Tyler has one of those clacky keyboards and the spacebar rattle drives me up the wall when he visits, so if 30 minutes really fixes it im forwarding him this thread whether he wants it or not!! Just my two cents!!
lol welcome. a holee mod is just a little strip of fabric bandaid wrapped on the stab stem so it stops wobbling it's not as weird as teh name sounds
tell Tyler to

PickleballPam58 must be NICE having a grandson who visits AND brings a mechanical keyboard. mine just brings laundry the holee mod is a bit of bandaid stuck under the spacebar stabilizer btw. i call that a STABLE relationship. intellectual humor, look it up
lol glitterfuel that pun got an actual groan out of me respect!! I'd say the holee mod is the one that's most worth it, because a rattly spacebar is the first thing everyone notices Just make sure the bandaid goes around the stab stem where the wire sits. I stuck mine on the wrong part the first time and had to pull the whole thing apart again classic me. ngl lubing switches is a whole weekend gone, and I have too many hobbies already I still have half a telescope mirror sitting on my desk from a grinding project I forgot about anyway!! Fun fact: the Holee mod is named after the person who came up with it, a keyboard modder who goes by Hol
PAM PickleballPam58. you're telling me Tyler shows up at grandma's house with an UNMODDED rattling spacebar?? in front of your own two ears?? i had to sit down. my cousin got off easy and he once spray painted a very nice fern on my mailbox. get that boy some tape and a band-aid for the stabilizer immediately
oh dont you worry... i already raided my bathroom cabinet and set a box of band-aids on his desk with a sticky note!! what i cant figure out is how a band-aid fixes a spacebar when it never once fixed his attitude about bringing the cart back at Publix 😂 and a fern on the mailbox at least it was a nice fern... i watched a Dateline last night where teh whole case cracked open over a neighbor's spray paint so your cousin should count his blessings
...half a telescope mirror sitting on my desk from a grinding project I forgot about...
just make sure the... what, you cant leave us hanging like that holee mod's fine but i'd still lube the stabs first before cutting up bread bags, half the time thats enough. my spacebar was quieter than my watch ticking after that, which is the only noise i actually like hearing at my desk...
quieter than your watch ticking is a weird flex but ok i used to wear my grandpa's wind-up timex to work and a coworker filed an actual complaint, so i get it. stab lube is fine but the tape mod is where it's at for me. two strips of painters tape on the back of the pcb, five minutes, zero skill needed, and it went from clacky to thocky. holee mod is for people who enjoy suffering with an xacto knife at 1am
tape mod is legit but it HAS to be painters tape. i used electrical tape first bc it was in the junk drawer and it got gummy and gross peeling it off. also nobody mentions a desk mat, half my noise was the case bouncing off the desk. i guess you could say i was taping into my potential
lol that pun was rough. painters tape peels clean bc the adhesive is weaker, so yeah electrical tape was always gonna leave goo
for actual switch mods, lubing is the one that makes the most difference and also the one that'll eat your whole weekend 90 switches, open every one, thin coat of 205g0 on the slider rails, close it back up if your switches have housing wobble, throw some

honestly yeah films for the wobble, but make sure the switches don't come with a pre-installed plate film... i bought a whole pack once before I noticed mine had one already lol. also if anyone's lubing tactiles, keep the 205g0 off the stem legs or the bump goes mushy!! I found that out the hard way, typing to Black Moth Super Rainbow at 2am and wondering why everything felt like linears
well thats good to know... Tyler's got a little jar of that 205g0 and a paintbrush and I'm sure he's been globbing it on everything, stem legs included!! he did let me try the tape mod on his board last weekend and I have to say I liked that one best it sounds a lot less clacky and nothing can go mushy because you're only sticking painter's tape on the back of the PCB I typed my whole HOA newsletter on it while watching the herons at the pond out back, and nobody came running to ask what all that racket was this time 😂 Just my two cents!!
