  • so ive been noticing this weird thing where some songs just have this **quiet dusty vibe** thats super specific — like theyre trying to sound like turning pages or creaking shelves or something its not exactly nostalgic but more like a mix of curiosity and being kinda lost? i cant explain it well but you know what i mean? its not just instrumental either, some songs with lyrics hit this too like they make me think of **forgotten stories** or finding an old book nobody’s read in decades. i dont even know if its intentional but im curious if anyone else gets this feeling from certain songs or am i just overthinking and its all in my head? idk man, maybe im just spending too much time in thrift stores looking at old vinyls again lol.

ooh yes!! that vibe is so specific but so good... like when a song feels like it's telling a story you almost remember but cant quite place? for me it's always something with airy strings or super quiet piano bits, maybe a little whispering vocal... like grouper's "heavy water/i'd rather be sleeping" or even some of the more mellow mount eerie tracks they just have this dusty, shadowy feel like you're flipping through yellowed pages in a corner of the stacks. also totally random but have you heard of stars of the lid? their stuff is mostly instrumental but it’s got that same "ancient knowledge" energy imo idk man, something about drone-y ambient music feels like it belongs in an old library soundtrack... oh!! and if you havent checked out the caretaker's "everywhere at the end of time" (at least the early stages) it kinda nails this too — sounds like faded memories and half-remembered ballroom tunes. def recommend if you wanna lean into the "forgotten stories" feel.

yeah that grouper track is exactly it... something about the way the reverb kinda hangs in the air, feels like you're in a room where the sunlight barely makes it through dusty windows. mount eerie works too, though sometimes it's a little too sparse for me, like it leans too hard into the 'haunted' vibe. ever heard helen geld? their stuff has this similar worn-out, half-forgotten quality but with just enough warmth to keep it from feeling too cold. i dunno, its like the music itself is an old photograph you found tucked in a book... also, kinda random but libraries these days are so sterile, right? like theyre all white walls and laptops now miss the ones with creaky floors and that faint musty smell

like, oh my god yes, that grouper track is *exactly* it like, makes me feel like i'm half-dreaming in a dusty corner of some ancient archive. you nailed the vibe—kinda haunting but cozy? also check out "untitled 3" by sigur rós if you havent, it's got that same quiet-story-you-cant-remember energy but with more atmosphere

ooo **ancient archive vibes??** i love that — feels like you're tiptoeing through secrets no one’s touched in centuries 📜✨ i’d add 'everything in its right place' by radiohead to this list. it’s got that weird, drifting energy like you’re in a library but teh books are whispering back at you. dont listen if you’re tired tho, it’ll put you in a trance 😅

like, oh man, i love this thread!! you guys are naming some absolute mood-setters... 'everything in its right place' is such a good pick, that song always feels like im floating through a slightly off-kilter dream... for me, id toss in 'double hesitation' by helvetia — it’s all lo-fi and hazy, like walking past shelves of forgotten folklore with half the lights burned out... also, totally random but have yall heard 'the alchemist' by caroline polachek?? the way it builds feels like uncovering some ancient spell tucked between the pages, its wild...

yeah helen geld’s got that vibe for sure like you’re flipping through yellowed pages and the air smells faintly of old glue and dust i’d add fingerbib to the list, specifically the way the synths drone in and out, feels like you’re tracing the same shelf over and over, not quite sure what you’re looking for but too engrossed to stop

lowkey omg yes that track gives me **exact same vibes** like the books are definitely muttering something cryptic. also have you tried 'spem in alium' by thomas tallis? it’s choral but so eerie and layered it legit feels like you’re surrounded by shelves that might just start rearranging themselves when you aren’t looking 👀
