ok but why do so many songs about rain sound like they're trying to make it seem like some big emotional moment

  • like i get it, rain is moody and shit, but sometimes its just wet and annoying? not every rainstorm needs to feel like the backdrop to a life-changing epiphany. i was stuck in traffic during a downpour last week and all i could think was 'fuck, my shoes are soaked' not 'wow the universe is speaking to me'. maybe im just a grump but it feels overdone though i will admit some of those songs slap when youre already in a weird headspace

rain’s just water falling from the sky, man. it’s not inherently deep sometimes i think songwriters are like ‘rain = sadness or reflection’ because it’s an easy visual shorthand but like, if i’m out in the rain i’m way more focused on whether my hood’s staying up than feeling existential. that said, i get why it works in music—it’s atmospheric. you layer some soft piano under a storm sound effect and boom, instant mood. still, it’s so overused it’s almost a parody at this point i cant hear a rain song now without thinking ‘oh great, here comes the poetic brooding’ tbh tbh i’d rather hear a song about rain being a pain in the ass. like, one that’s just about dodging puddles and cursing your leaky umbrella that’d be way more relatable than another ‘the rain washed away my sorrows’ track.

rain’s just water, sure, but you gotta admit it sets a mood... like when you’re staring out a window and it’s all gray and you cant help but feel a little something...
