Momo Boyd

Not long after singer-songwriter Momo Boyd released her sweeping heartbreak single ‘American Love Song’ in March of last year, something shifted in her. “That gave me the confidence and the knowledge that I could actually do this,” she tells NME over Zoom from her home in New Jersey, voluminous brown curls resting on her shoulders as she sports a cosy navy sweatshirt and large burgundy-framed glasses.

The Michigan native isn’t talking about simply making and performing music; she’s been doing that with her siblings in the soft rock band Infinity Song for over a decade, busking on the streets of New York and singing in her dad’s choirs long before that. She’s referring to something slightly more daunting here: writing and releasing her own music as a solo artist. “I consider myself to be a completely different artist than the version of me that’s in the group,” she says. “This version of me is insanely more emotional, and a bit more personal.”

Since appearing on NME’s The Cover two years ago, Infinity Song have continued to ascend, propelled by their buoyant harmonies – a jam-packed world tour, one electric Glastonbury debut and their self-titled third album due out in a matter of weeks. “It’s been a lot of learning, a lot of getting our reps in and getting comfortable with the demands of where we are and where we’re trying to be,” Boyd reflects.

After finding their soft rock rhythm on second album ‘Metamorphosis Complete’ in 2024, Boyd took a leap of faith with her debut solo single, her dewy vocals and cascading guitars on ‘American Love Song’ leading to three million Spotify streams to date and reams of social media comments comparing her wounded Americana sound to Lana Del Rey.

With that vote of confidence from her fans, Boyd dropped her debut EP ‘Miss Michigan’ earlier this spring, which sees the 27-year-old artist examine her selfhood through the lens of past relationships. “It’s extremely parallel to my real life,” she says of the EP with a blushful laugh. “Every single song [was written] because I have lived it.”

As the brains behind Infinity Song’s viral ‘Hater’s Anthem’, which pokes fun at the comical nature of our superiority complexes, it’s no surprise Boyd found herself back in self-reflective territory. Whether she’s conducting a relationship post-mortem on the baroque-country ‘Cold Hands’, downplaying her feelings on the pillowy soft rock breather ‘Second Best’, or leading a girly-pop cheer anthem for her inner people pleaser on ‘She’s A Sweetheart’, Boyd’s sharp self-awareness fuels her lyricism.

The musical range on display won’t be a surprise to those who discovered Boyd through another huge moment this year, after she featured on Baby Keem’s ‘Good Flirts’ from his new album ‘Ca$ino”. Her breezy refrain revealed a playful streak, trading prickly bars with fellow featured artist Kendrick Lamar, as she asserts: “Ain’t comin’ home on a Friday night / I’m all good, my hips still whine”. The opportunity arose when Boyd invited Lamar’s longtime collaborator Dave Free to an Infinity Song show in Los Angeles, after which he requested a demo from her. “I believe in us so much that I feel like anything is possible when you come to an Infinity Song show,” she says.

For Boyd, that moment was a glimpse into all the places she could go musically. While she grew up on gospel, Motown and jazz, she’s proven that her velvety alto can just as easily slink into the wandering rhythms of R&B, country-pop, folk, or a blend of all of the above. “It showed me my range,” she says of the recent feature, “that if I’m pushed, I can do more than what I’m used to.” She does exactly that by signing off ‘Miss Michigan’ with the R&B U-turn of ‘Oops’, channelling her inner diva as she proclaims that she “never meant to break your heart” in sync with a sassy beat.

“I believe in us so much that I feel like anything is possible when you come to an Infinity Song show”

While the boost in Boyd’s profile of late has brought new listeners, it’s also coincided with an influx of “industry plant” allegations. Boyd knows this is par for the course, especially for female musicians. “I didn’t take it seriously for a second, because I know how hard I’ve worked to be where I am,” she says, breaking out into laughter at the thought. “When you see something that’s so wrong, you don’t even really get offended by it.”

In reality, the graft behind Infinity Song’s success story goes back decades. Growing up homeschooled with her bandmates, brothers Abraham and Israel and sister Angel, and their five other siblings, the Boyd family spent their childhoods singing around the kitchen table and busking with the encouragement of their choir director father, John Boyd. After moving to New York in 2006, their gospel harmonies echoed around Central Park for years before their much-practised talents landed them a meeting with Jay-Z and his label Roc Nation in 2016, where they sang like their lives depended on it to land a record deal.

‘Miss Michigan’, then, is a timely callback to Boyd’s roots and her early childhood in Detroit. “There’s a purity that can be traced back to that time, a youthfulness and innocence, and the beginning of my life as a big dreamer,” she says. It also encapsulates her many different sides. “I’ve always been a bit of a stubborn person, my siblings will tell you,” she grins. “But there is another side of me that is more shy and unsure, and at times insecure. Depending on the situation, that side can come out and run the show. This project is me navigating and trying to find the balance of what that looks like.”

It’s easier to back yourself when the industry is right there with you. One of Boyd’s most vocal cheerleaders is none other than alt-R&B superstar SZA. The pair finally met in person earlier this year at Justin Bieber’s intimate LA showcase ahead of his Coachella headline performances. “I didn’t know if she was going to recognise me, but as soon as she saw me, she was like, ‘Come here, give me a hug!’” Boyd says, beaming at the memory. “She was like, ‘I’m so proud of you. This is your moment. I hope all your dreams can come true. Use this moment to build everything that you dream of.’ I did nearly cry, because I admire her so much, and to get those types of words from somebody who I’ve looked up to for years, what more can a girl ask for?”

Boyd is heeding the Grammy-winner’s advice as she prepares to work “double shifts” when Infinity Song head out on tour this month, where she’s scheduled to perform solo gigs in between concert dates, including as opening support for Bleachers. “It’s going to stretch me and challenge me, but I welcome it. I think, honestly, it’s going to be a dream come true,” she says. Not one to rest on her laurels, Boyd insists that Infinity Song too are raring for the next era, bringing a “certainty” to the new record that follows the “self-exploration” of their last. “It’s still a soft rock album, but it is much more evolved,” she asserts. “It feels like we’ve arrived.”

With the spotlight shining bright on Boyd this year, she doesn’t appear the slightest bit dazed. She chooses instead to channel all the extra attention back into her artistry. “It’s really fun, but it can be here today, gone tomorrow,” she says pragmatically. “There’s nothing to really keep the people invested and interested. It all comes back to the music.”

Momo Boyd’s ‘Miss Michigan’ is out now via Roc Nation. Infinity Song’s self-titled new album is out on June 12, also via Roc Nation.

The post Momo Boyd: “I consider myself to be a completely different artist than the version that’s in Infinity Song” appeared first on NME.

Last month Underoath announced they’d play their 2006 album Define the Great Line in full at Furnace Fest, and now they’ve revealed a full 20th anniversary tour for the album. August Burns Red, Atreyu, As Cities Burn, and Emery open the shows, varying by date, and Chris Dudley says, “What this album has meant to us, and so many others, over the past 20 years is hard to quantify. It gave us permission to be ourselves. It sent us around the world. It gave people the freedom to say (and scream) the things out loud they had buried deep. It will outlive us. We still play these songs on stage 20 years later and get those chills. The opportunity to devote an entire tour to presenting this album in the best way it ever has been, alongside friends we’ve had since before it was released, is going to be bucket list material for us.”

The shows begin on November 5 in St. Louis and run through December, with a few dates still TBA, and an NYC show at Brooklyn Paramount on December 8 with August Burns Red, Atreyu, and Emery. Tickets to all dates go on sale Friday, June 12 at 10 AM local, with various presales starting Tuesday, June 9 at 12 PM local.

We named Define the Great Line one of 15 seminal albums from metalcore’s second wave (2000-2010), and Andrew wrote:

Underoath scored one of melodic metalcore’s biggest mainstream breakthroughs with 2004’s They’re Only Chasing Safety — their fourth album and first with lead screamer Spencer Chamberlain (who replaced Dallas Taylor, who went on to front the Southern rock-tinged metalcore band Maylene and the Sons of Disaster) — but it was that album’s darker, heavier, more experimental followup that found Underoath at their creative peak. Outside of lead single “Writing on the Walls,” almost nothing on Define the Great Line scans as “radio-friendly.” Spencer had really settled into his role as frontman for this album, and he brought his own vocal and lyrical style to the band rather than trying to fill the shoes of Dallas Taylor, who the previous album had at least partially been written with. His screams were more guttural on this record, and his lyricism grappled with faith in a way that was extremely personal and never felt like stereotypical Christian metalcore. The depth in the lyricism was matched by a wide range of musical influences, which included bone-crushing metalcore, atmospheric post-metal, industrial interludes, and more. In place of usual producer James Paul Wisner was Killswitch Engage’s Adam Dutkiewicz and The Chariot collaborator Matt Goldman, and that new team helped Underoath achieve the more cavernous sound that these songs demanded. It was an album that made you forget everything you thought you knew about Underoath, elevated them above the endless sea of “scene” bands, and set the tone for the second and best chapter of their career.

We’ve been looking forward to the third proper Chat Pile album, which follows their 2025 collaboration with Hayden Pedigo, In the Earth Again, and after covering Nirvana on a Sub Pop single in February, they’ve announced Who Loves the Sun, due out on September 4 via The Flenser (pre-order on vinyl). “This record focuses on my grievances with the modern world,” vocalist Ray B. says. “AI, genocide, climate change, the power elite, $$$$ hoarding pigs— all that shit fucks up your life and mine. The band is definitely stretching out their abilities on the album and I too felt inspired to go further— as a huge fan of Boston, I like to think Brad Delp is somewhere up there, smiling down, as I take the layering to new heights, but who can say? We have fun with it.”

Bassist Stin adds “This album contains a healthy dose of the usual Chat Pile airing of grievances against the state of the world, but deeper at it’s heart I feel Who Loves the Sun is grappling with the challenges of trying to keep one’s humanity in a time of extreme anti-humanity.”

The first single is “Deep Blue.” Stin says it’s “the first track we wrote for the album and the one that helped set the tone for the whole thing. I personally love this because it sounds like Chat Pile doing a Billy Squire song. It’s our ‘Lonely is the Night,’ which is actually a fake Led Zeppelin song so who knows what the hell we’re actually doing here?”

Ray adds, “Technology is rapidly ruining our lives, all promise seemingly squandered on the worst things, like killing people, wasting resources, destroying art- shrinking our brains and pulling us further apart than ever before.”

Chat Pile are on tour in Australia and New Zealand now, and have shows in Europe in August. They’ve now announced North American shows in the fall, beginning in September and running through November. They’ll be joined by Soul Glo, Prize Horse, Virga, and Shallowater, varying by show, and you can see all dates below.

The NYC show is at Brooklyn Steel on November 10 with Soul Glo and Shallowater. Tickets for that and all dates go on sale Friday, June 12 at 10 AM local.

We’re bringing Farm Aid to Virginia to stand with the farmers and fishers who feed Hampton Roads and beyond — and to grow a food system that works for everyone.”

Since 1985, Farm Aid has raised more than $90 million to support “programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.”

Ty Segall has announced new album Chrome which will be out August 28 via Drag City. It was mostly recorded live with help from Bitchin Bajas’ Cooper Crain and Ty’s band of Ben Boye, Evan Burrows, Mikal Cronin, and Emmett Kelly. Evan also contributed to the songwriting, as did Matt Yoka and Ty’s wife Denée.

The same day, Ty will also release the Love Fuzzz EP, featuring a “frenzied sludge & stoner take” on Twins’ “Love Fuzzz” and on the flip it’s “My Pet Guru.”

Chrome is billed as one of Ty’s heaviest records to date and first single “Black Paint” bears that out. It’s a ripper and you can watch the video, filmed along’s Ty’s recent live shows, below.

Synthpop icons Soft Cell have shared full details of their final album Danceteria which will be out September 25 via Republic of Music. It was finished last year before co-founder Dave Ball passed away in October. “There can be no more recordings of Soft Cell without Dave, it would not be possible,” says frontman Marc Almond. “The sad reality is that Dave Ball was half of Soft Cell, and live work aside, I can’t write Soft Cell songs without him.”

“The ‘Danceteria’ album reflects what we were going through as Brits in New York,” says Almond. “We arrived there in 1981 with a bunch of songs that were initially written about London and Leeds. They were songs that reflected the greyness and repression of Margaret Thatcher’s Britain. But once we hit New York, the same songs became infused with a fresh, streetwise sensibility. We were in the clubs, where ecstasy was available for the first time, and we felt privileged to be part of that secret. Our music took on a hybrid quality. We were quintessentially British, but we felt that we were also an honorary American band. So it feels right that the last Soft Cell album is invested in those myths and stories. It brings everything full circle for us, and it’s a fitting tribute to Dave.”

The album includes this year’s single “Out Come the Freaks,” a cover of Was (Not Was)’s cult banger, and the new single is Danceteria‘s title track which is set at NYC’s legendary ’80s club. You can watch the video below.

Towa Bird Dirty Habit

Towa Bird has confirmed dates for a North American headlining tour, set to begin on September 13 at The Independent in San Francisco. From there, the songwriter—who recently released her celebrated new LP Gentleman—will perform in Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Montreal, New York, Cambridge, and Washington, DC, before wrapping up on October 3 at The Foundry at The Fillmore in Philadelphia. Mother Soki will open all dates.

Gentleman was produced by Patrick Wimberly (MGMT, Blood Orange) and features Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna. The LP is the follow-up to her 2024 debut American Hero. The album was recorded in Brooklyn and Los Angeles and finds Bird reflecting on the incessant touring she did the year prior.

“The Gentleman isn’t a stage persona,” says Bird. “It’s a cultural lifestyle (e.g. Ziggy Stardust, IGOR, Silk Sonic) that represents a whole world that I want this album, myself and my fans to live in. The boys want to be the gentleman and the girls want to be with the gentleman. If the last album was a pub, this is a cocktail bar. If the last album was a white tank, this is a double-breasted suit.” She added: “In a lot of ways this record feels like a conversation with me, and a reflection of my personality and the body I inhabit. I love that all these songs sound like how I look.”

In a New York Times interview surrounding the release of Gentleman, Towa Bird and writer Phoebe Reilly reflected on the songwriting process for the album. The story reads: “Bird and Wimberly, along with several additional writers, began work on Gentleman in February of last year with the goal of pushing Bird ‘out of my comfort zone,’ she said. ‘I spent a lot of time on my first record thinking about how I can best package it for the audience,’ she continued, during a drive to nearby Echo Park. ‘This one I was like, what do I want to do?’”
