Catwoman actress Julie Newmar

Original Catwoman actress Julie Newmar has been hit with backlash after suggesting that men should run Hollywood.

The star famously played the DC character in the 1960s Batman series, and in a new interview, reflected on playing sexualised roles during her career and the male attention it has attracted.

“Luckily, I liked it,” she told The Guardian. “It was good. I’m… not the first in line in the #MeToo class.”

Newmar then elaborated: “I love men too much. I understand them. And the heads of studios, yes, they break a door down, and they do this or they do that. That’s how they act. You think you’re gonna change things? Not a whole lot… And you know what? It works. It works beautifully because men are very good to women.”

When asked about the entertainment industry being run by men, the actress then responded: “It should be. They do it best.”

The #MeToo movement gained prominence in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct against producer Harvey Weinstein, with many survivors coming forward with accusations of abuse in the entertainment industry.

The former head of Miramax Films was one of the most prominent names exposed by the movement, with more than 80 accusations of misconduct levelled against him. Weinstein has denied any and all wrongdoing, but is currently in Rikers Island prison following a rape conviction.

In 2020, he was found guilty of first-degree and third-degree rape and sentenced to 23 years in prison. The New York Court of Appeals later overturned the 2020 conviction, deeming that the judge at the trial gave improper rulings. This included the decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case.

However, Weinstein remains imprisoned, serving a 16-year sentence following a 2022 California rape conviction.

Last month, Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett reflected on the progress of #MeToo, arguing since then it had been “killed very quickly”.

“There are a lot of people with platforms who are able to speak up with relative safety and say, ‘This has happened to me,’ and the so-called average woman on the street is saying #MeToo. Why does that get shut down?” she said at the Cannes Film Festival.

“What [the movement] revealed is a systemic layer of abuse, not only in this industry but in all industries, and if you don’t identify a problem, you can’t solve the problem.”

She admitted that she is still on film sets that have a minority of women, adding: “I love men, but what happens is the jokes become the same.

“You just have to brace yourself slightly, and I’m used to that, but it just gets boring for everybody when you walk into a homogeneous workplace. I think it has an effect on the work.”

like seriously, i swear the things shrink every generation. i lost one of mine last week and spent an hour tearing apart my apartment only to find it stuck to the bottom of my sock (dont ask). its not even like they sound better for being tiny, they just get more annoying to handle. and dont get me started on the 'tap to control' nonsense — half the time im accidentally pausing my music when i try to adjust them. bigger isnt always better but maybe we could stop at 'still fits in my hand without vanishing into another dimension'? anyone else think this is getting ridiculous or am i just cursed with butterfingers?

like seriously, every other folk or country song is about a train. is it just cause they rhyme with pain and rain or is there something deeper going on? i get that they used to be a big part of life but its 2026... unless youre a railfan (no offense if you are) trains arent exactly the centerpiece of modern existence im not saying theyre bad songs, some of em are classics, but its weird how the imagery sticks around so much. maybe its nostalgia for simpler times or something. idk, now im just picturing someone sitting on a porch writing about the 5:15 to nowhere...

okay so i was blasting this one track earlier today (cant even remember the name now, typical) and it had this super urgent beat?? like you could practically see yourself sprinting for a bus or skidding into a meeting 5 mins late, all frazzled and out of breath ... anyway it got me thinking, are there other songs that just give off that "im so behind on life" vibe?? bonus points if theyre electric or synth-heavy cuz those always feel extra chaotic lmao

also side note: did you know theres a pulsar called the black widow that basically emits radio waves at such a precise rhythm it could hypothetically keep time better than an atomic clock??? (...i know this is unrelated but i had to share, its so cool)

anyway back to the point — what songs make you feel like youre in a movie montage of frantic coffee spilling and missed train platforms?!

like objectively they were worse in every way — battery died in a day, screens were tiny, you could barely text — but theres something about that little *snap* when you close em that just hits different. every time i see someone pull out a razr or some other ancient brick i get weirdly nostalgic even though i know id hate actually using one again its prob just rose-tinted glasses but idk man, modern phones are so sleek and functional and yet they feel so... soulless? like theyre missing some dumb charm. maybe its because flip phones were the last era before we all became glued to screens 24/7 now its like the phone owns you instead of the other way around. or maybe im just old and cranky.

like i dont mean twist endings or the ones that leave you shook. just endings that felt so right for the story they told, no loose ends, no forced drama, just...satisfying. like you sit back after and go "yeah, thats how it was supposed to end." for me its **the farewell** that last shot of awkwafina on the street? perfect. didnt need anything more. ive seen too many movies lately where the last 10 minutes feel like they were written by someone who got bored or ran out of ideas. ruins the whole thing. anyway im tryna find more movies like that. ones where the ending hits just as hard as the rest of it, maybe even harder any recs? i dont care about the genre, just something where the ending feels intentional, you know? not like they slapped it on at the last second.

like seriously, im sitting here listening to this mix and out of nowhere theres a fucking seagull or some owl hoots and i cant tell if its supposed to be atmospheric or just weird. is it because nature is chill or because someone thought ‘yeah this drop needs more seagulls’? and dont get me wrong, i get it for like ambient tracks or stuff thats supposed to feel outdoorsy but when its dropped in the middle of a banger it just feels out of place. unless its a jungle themed track or something, which tbh would be kinda cool. anyway im probably overthinking this but now im tempted to make a playlist of just tracks with random animal noises to see if it actually works or if its just distracting. anyone else notice this or am i just hearing things?

The Cure played ‘Treasure’ and ‘In Your House’ for the first time in over a decade at their show at North Festival – watch below.

Robert Smith and co. played the second of their summer shows at the event in Maia, Portugal on Sunday night (June 7), two nights after their return to the stage as a headliner at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, a show that was enjoyed by thousands, including Fontaines D.C.’s Grian Chatten.

The North Festival set saw them bring in tracks that they did not play at Primavera, including the deep cut ‘Treasure’, a track from their 1996 album ‘Wild Mood Swings’, and ‘In Your House’, the goth classic from their second album ‘Seventeen Seconds’. The songs made their first appearances on a Cure setlist since 2013 and 2011 respectively.

Other songs they played in Portugal that did not make the cut at Primavera included ‘Want’ and ‘M’. Check out footage from the show here:

Another surprise in Porto tonight!
🖤

The Cure have just played “In Your House” from Seventeen Seconds for the first time since 2011.

They dedicated the entire first encore to Seventeen Seconds, performing four songs from the album back-to-back:

‘Burn’
‘Fascination Street’
‘alt.end’
‘Push’
‘Mint Car’
‘In Between Days’
‘Just Like Heaven’
‘Treasure’
‘Want’
‘From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea’
‘Endsong’
‘In Your House’
‘M’
‘Play For Today’
‘A Forest’
‘Lullaby’
‘Wrong Number’
‘The Walk’
‘The Lovecats’
‘Friday I’m In Love’
‘Close To Me’
‘Why Can’t I Be You?’
‘Boys Don’t Cry’

Smith also joined Olivia Rodrigo during her surprise set at Primavera this weekend (June 6), debuting their new duet ‘What’s Wrong With Me’. “I feel like I’m gonna cry,” Rodrigo said at the end of the song. “I can’t believe that’s a thing that happened in the real world and not just a figment of my imagination.”

Having now kicked off their 2026 summer UK and European tour, their next stop comes on Friday night (June 12) at Nova Rock in Austria. You can check out a full list of their upcoming UK and Ireland live shows below, and visit here to buy any remaining tickets.

The shows will mark The Cure’s first time on stage together since their show at London’s Troxy last November. That gig was in front of just 3,000 fans – including Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong, Radiohead‘s Ed O’Brien, Boy George, Mogwai‘s Stuart Braithwaite, and Pedro Pascal in the crowd – and came in celebration of their latest album, ‘Songs Of A Lost World’.

The Cure’s 2026 UK and Ireland headline shows are:

JUNE
26 – Marlay Park, Dublin
28 – Belsonic, Belfast

AUGUST
21 – Live From Wythenshawe Park, Manchester
23 – Edinburgh Summer Sessions, Royal Highland Showgrounds, Edinburgh

Smith previously confirmed that the band have another new album to follow up ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ that’s “virtually finished”, as well as a third new record also on the way. He added that he wanted to have at least one of those albums finished and shared before they head out on tour, suggesting that a release could be arriving before the new tour dates start.

The singer also added that he can imagine the celebrations continuing all the way up until the band hits their 50th anniversary. “We’ll probably be playing quite regularly through until the next anniversary – the 2028 anniversary! It’s looming on the horizon,” he shared.
