Kiefer and Don Was by Malik Gist - courtesy of Blue Note Records

Kiefer Shackelford, the Los Angeles pianist and producer who records as Kiefer, has signed to the legendary Blue Note Records for the release of a new album this fall, his debut for the label.. Kiefer has been hailed as one of the most inspired artists operating at the intersection of jazz and hip-hop. He’s developing a showcase for that sound via his newly announced Over The Breaks festival.

The fest will take place at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles this Sept. 18 and 19 with performances from GENA (Karriem Riggins + Liv.e), CARRTOONS, Luke Titus, Shibo, and more. All artists on the lineup inhabit a “jazz adjacent” sound, though Kiefer finds that term often holds artists back from a breakthrough.

“‘Jazz adjacent,’ as a term, presents a problem for the artists under that label,” Kiefer says. “It is vague and clunky, and it’s no coincidence that many acts caught in ‘jazz adjacent’ limbo struggle to find their place on festival lineups. I choose to call my music ‘Over The Breaks’ and decided to curate a festival of acts who make similar sounds. Over The Breaks, named after a J Dilla track, features artists that represent this sound to me. It means everything to have the legendary Karriem Riggins—co-producer of the original ‘Over the Breaks’ track—headlining night one.”

As for his signing to Blue Note, Kiefer adds, “When I was four years old, my dad used to play recordings of great jazz musicians and make me recite their names: John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Clark. The catalog he used to educate me was Blue Note. Blue Note is the most iconic jazz label of all time. As someone who loves jazz, to be on the Blue Note roster is a huge honor. As someone who was raised on the Blue Note catalog, it is deeply sentimental and life-affirming.”

“Kiefer represents a new generation of pianist/composers who grew up equally fluent in jazz harmony, hip hop production, and beat culture,” Blue Note President Don Was chimes in. “What makes him so special is that, beneath the modern production, is a deeply emotional and sophisticated musician with real touch, feel, and compositional identity. He’s one of the clearest examples of where contemporary music is headed and we’re thrilled to release his records on the Blue Note label.”

like seriously, im sitting here listening to this mix and out of nowhere theres a fucking seagull or some owl hoots and i cant tell if its supposed to be atmospheric or just weird. is it because nature is chill or because someone thought ‘yeah this drop needs more seagulls’? and dont get me wrong, i get it for like ambient tracks or stuff thats supposed to feel outdoorsy but when its dropped in the middle of a banger it just feels out of place. unless its a jungle themed track or something, which tbh would be kinda cool. anyway im probably overthinking this but now im tempted to make a playlist of just tracks with random animal noises to see if it actually works or if its just distracting. anyone else notice this or am i just hearing things?

like seriously, i swear the things shrink every generation. i lost one of mine last week and spent an hour tearing apart my apartment only to find it stuck to the bottom of my sock (dont ask). its not even like they sound better for being tiny, they just get more annoying to handle. and dont get me started on the 'tap to control' nonsense — half the time im accidentally pausing my music when i try to adjust them. bigger isnt always better but maybe we could stop at 'still fits in my hand without vanishing into another dimension'? anyone else think this is getting ridiculous or am i just cursed with butterfingers?

The Cure played ‘Treasure’ and ‘In Your House’ for the first time in over a decade at their show at North Festival – watch below.

Robert Smith and co. played the second of their summer shows at the event in Maia, Portugal on Sunday night (June 7), two nights after their return to the stage as a headliner at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, a show that was enjoyed by thousands, including Fontaines D.C.’s Grian Chatten.

The North Festival set saw them bring in tracks that they did not play at Primavera, including the deep cut ‘Treasure’, a track from their 1996 album ‘Wild Mood Swings’, and ‘In Your House’, the goth classic from their second album ‘Seventeen Seconds’. The songs made their first appearances on a Cure setlist since 2013 and 2011 respectively.

Other songs they played in Portugal that did not make the cut at Primavera included ‘Want’ and ‘M’. Check out footage from the show here:

Another surprise in Porto tonight!
🖤

The Cure have just played “In Your House” from Seventeen Seconds for the first time since 2011.

They dedicated the entire first encore to Seventeen Seconds, performing four songs from the album back-to-back:

The Cure played:

‘Alone’
‘Pictures Of You’
‘High’
‘A Night Like This’
‘Lovesong’
‘The Last Day Of Summer’
‘Burn’
‘Fascination Street’
‘alt.end’
‘Push’
‘Mint Car’
‘In Between Days’
‘Just Like Heaven’
‘Treasure’
‘Want’
‘From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea’
‘Endsong’
‘In Your House’
‘M’
‘Play For Today’
‘A Forest’
‘Lullaby’
‘Wrong Number’
‘The Walk’
‘The Lovecats’
‘Friday I’m In Love’
‘Close To Me’
‘Why Can’t I Be You?’
‘Boys Don’t Cry’

Smith also joined Olivia Rodrigo during her surprise set at Primavera this weekend (June 6), debuting their new duet ‘What’s Wrong With Me’. “I feel like I’m gonna cry,” Rodrigo said at the end of the song. “I can’t believe that’s a thing that happened in the real world and not just a figment of my imagination.”

Having now kicked off their 2026 summer UK and European tour, their next stop comes on Friday night (June 12) at Nova Rock in Austria. You can check out a full list of their upcoming UK and Ireland live shows below, and visit here to buy any remaining tickets.

The shows will mark The Cure’s first time on stage together since their show at London’s Troxy last November. That gig was in front of just 3,000 fans – including Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong, Radiohead‘s Ed O’Brien, Boy George, Mogwai‘s Stuart Braithwaite, and Pedro Pascal in the crowd – and came in celebration of their latest album, ‘Songs Of A Lost World’.

The Cure’s 2026 UK and Ireland headline shows are:

JUNE
26 – Marlay Park, Dublin
28 – Belsonic, Belfast

AUGUST
21 – Live From Wythenshawe Park, Manchester
23 – Edinburgh Summer Sessions, Royal Highland Showgrounds, Edinburgh

Smith previously confirmed that the band have another new album to follow up ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ that’s “virtually finished”, as well as a third new record also on the way. He added that he wanted to have at least one of those albums finished and shared before they head out on tour, suggesting that a release could be arriving before the new tour dates start.

The singer also added that he can imagine the celebrations continuing all the way up until the band hits their 50th anniversary. “We’ll probably be playing quite regularly through until the next anniversary – the 2028 anniversary! It’s looming on the horizon,” he shared.

Ike Quebec Bossa Nova Soul Tone Poet vinyl

Saxophonist Ike Quebec’s take on the bossa nova craze, 1962’s Bossa Nova Soul Samba, is one of Blue Note’s August picks to be reissued through their Tone Poet Vinyl Series. Quebec’s The Complete Blue Note 45 Sessions was reissued through the same series last year.

Quebec is joined on the record by Kenny Burrell, Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo, and Garvin Masseaux. Blending Brazilian bossa nova rhythms with his blues influences, Quebec offered a unique take on the genre.

Originally a pianist, Quebec switched to tenor in the early ’40s when he was in his early 20s. It was clear he made the right decision on his 78s recorded with Blue Note and Savoy, including his hit “Blue Harlem.” As a sideman, he worked with Benny Carter, Kenny Clarke, Roy Eldridge, and Cab Calloway.

In the late ’40s, Quebec did a bit of freelancing as a Blue Note A&R man and brought Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell to the label. Drug problems kept Quebec from recording for most of the 1950s, but he made a triumphant comeback in the early ’60s. Though he came back as strong a player as ever, he was suffering from lung cancer, which claimed his life at the age of 44 in 1963.

The Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Bossa Nova Soul Samba was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket. Recent releases in the series include works from Jackie McLean, Michel Petrucciani, Big John Patton, and Curtis Amy.

“During the 2026 season of Tone Poet we’ll revisit rare gems, bold under-appreciated dates, and, of course, beloved titles from the Blue Note catalog that fans have been patiently waiting for,” Harley shared earlier this year.

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. “What I’m really in it for is just getting lost for seven hours a day in my music, leaving my worries behind and entering the spirit world of decisions that are made unconsciously with what keyboard to use or what sound to chase.” Kelley Stoltz has been making amazing DIY pop out of San Francisco for over 25 years, for such labels as Sub Pop, Third Man and John Dwyer’s Castle Face. His latest is If You Don’t Know Me, Buy Now and is his first of three albums planned for this year.

We talked to Kelley about the new albums, how he got into writing songs and home recording, and how he’s mostly ok with being a cult artist for the new episode of BV Interviews. We also talked about his time living in New York City in the ’90s where he worked briefly for Jeff Buckley (duties included sorting his fan mail), how he went from being an Echo & The Bunnymen superfan to opening for them and then actually joining the band, and his current role as a Robyn Hitchcock sideman. Plus: EBows, kids music, five records he thinks everyone should own and lots more.

You can hear our full conversation with Kelley Stoltz on the June 8 episode of BV Interviews, available wherever you get your podcasts and below.

okay so i was blasting this one track earlier today (cant even remember the name now, typical) and it had this super urgent beat?? like you could practically see yourself sprinting for a bus or skidding into a meeting 5 mins late, all frazzled and out of breath ... anyway it got me thinking, are there other songs that just give off that "im so behind on life" vibe?? bonus points if theyre electric or synth-heavy cuz those always feel extra chaotic lmao

also side note: did you know theres a pulsar called the black widow that basically emits radio waves at such a precise rhythm it could hypothetically keep time better than an atomic clock??? (...i know this is unrelated but i had to share, its so cool)

anyway back to the point — what songs make you feel like youre in a movie montage of frantic coffee spilling and missed train platforms?!
