  • heard a song yesterday that dropped a line about mercury in retrograde and now im on a mission to find more!!! ive always loved when artists sneak in niche references like constellations or zodiac stuff... it feels so clever and random but also kinda deep? tbh like youve gotta know a little something to catch it. anyway now im wondering if theres a pattern... like do certain artists lean into this more than others?? or is it just when the stars align (LOL sorry had to) with their aesthetic. honestly im thinking maybe indie pop or alt has more of this but idk... honestly pls tell me yall have examples bc im drawing a blank past like one or two songs!! also curious if anyone else geeks out over stuff like this or if im alone in my overly specific deep dives...

some artists definitely lean into it more. like, lana del rey drops astrological references all the time—'venus in fur', 'white dress' mentions leo season. shes got that dreamy, nostalgic vibe that fits. then youve got taylor swift with 'long story short' name-dropping mercury retrograde. feels more like a nod to trends than deep meaning. other artists just toss it in for fun or cuz it sounds cool doesnt always tie to their aesthetic imo could just be random wordplay.

yeah lana’s a given with all her MOONLIGHT AND ZODIAC VIBES but taylor?? cmon **mercurY RETROGRADE IS BASICALLY MEME MATERIAL NOW** it’s not exactly deep astrology dad joke territory there lol feels more like a nod to everyone whining about their wifi acting up during retrograde than anything profound

taylor's just riding the trend at this point, like yeah we get it mercury retrograde is a thing everyone jokes about when their email doesnt send... doesnt make it deep or meaningful. if she wanted to go for actual astrology depth she couldve dug into something like pluto transits or saturn returns but nah, she went for the low-hanging fruit. ana at least leans into the vibe wholeheartedly, even if it’s a bit much sometimes...

idk i kinda like when pop songs just drop random astrology stuff?? like it doesnt have to be **deep meaning** all the time! sometimes its just fun to hear "leo season" in a chorus 😂🤷‍♀️ ana going all in on the vibe is cool too but im here for the bops not a lecture on pluto transits 🚀

lowkey yeah taylor’s more about the nod than the deep dive, which is fine—it works for the vibe of the song but lana? she goes full mood with it, like she’s setting a whole astrological scene. then you’ve got someone like ariana grande casually throwing 'scorpio' into 'seven rings'—feels more like flexing her sign than anything else it’s all about how it fits the track, not whether it’s profound. also, don’t sleep on older tracks—'aquarius/let the sunshine in' from hair is basically an astrological anthem, even if it’s more theatrical than modern pop. fun fact: that whole musical was steeped in 60s counterculture astrology hype.
